Snowpiercer - Klimaatweek - met nagesprek
In a frozen post-apocalyptic world, the last survivors aboard a perpetually moving train revolt against a brutal class system that hides shocking truths about power and survival.
In a post-apocalyptic future, the Earth has frozen over after a failed climate experiment. The last survivors live on a train that endlessly circles the globe: the Snowpiercer. Inside the train, a strict class division has emerged — the rich live in luxury at the front, while the poor suffer in misery at the back. A rebellion breaks out when the lower class decides to fight their way forward, car by car, to overthrow the system.
Snowpiercer is a breathtaking action spectacle that dares to ask big questions about the impact of climate change on the Earth and our role in society. Is pop culture the right way to raise these important questions, or does a film like this miss its mark? We discuss this with Maarten Keulemans, science editor at De Volkskrant, and scientist Gabriela (Gaby) Alberola, whose work at the University of Amsterdam focuses, among other things, on the allocation of climate change budgets in the Global South. In een post-apocalyptische toekomst is de aarde bevroren na een mislukt klimaatexperiment. De laatste overlevenden wonen in een trein die eindeloos rond de wereld rijdt: de Snowpiercer. Binnen die trein is een harde klassenverdeling ontstaan — de rijken leven luxueus vooraan, terwijl de armen in ellende achterin overleven. Een opstand breekt uit wanneer de onderklasse besluit om wagon voor wagon naar voren te vechten om het systeem omver te werpen.
Snowpiercer is een adembenemend actiespektakel dat grootse vragen durft te stellen over de impact van klimaatverandering op de aarde en op onze maatschappelijke rol hierin. Is popcultuur dé manier om deze grote vragen te stellen of schiet een film als deze zijn doel voorbij? We bespreken het met Maarten Keulemans, wetenschapsredacteur bij De Volkskrant, en wetenschapper Gabriela (Gaby) Alberola.
