In rural Kenya, a gifted 13-year-old girl defies a forced marriage to claim her right to education and self-determination.
In northern Kenya’s Turkana region, 13-year-old Nawi excels at school but faces being married off for a dowry of livestock. When her father arranges a wedding to an older man, she decides to escape on the eve of the ceremony. What follows is a courageous fight for self-determination and education, and a challenge to the tradition of child marriage. With breathtaking landscapes and a remarkable performance by Michelle Lemuya Ikeny, the film delivers both urgency and hope.
In de afgelegen Turkana-streek in Noord-Kenia blinkt de dertienjarige Nawi uit op school, maar staat ze voor een gedwongen huwelijk in ruil voor een bruidsschat van vee. Wanneer haar vader haar uithuwelijkt aan een oudere man, besluit ze de avond voor haar huwelijk te vluchten. Het markeert het begin van een moedige strijd voor zelfbeschikking en onderwijs, én tegen een hardnekkige traditie. Met indrukwekkende landschappen en een prachtige hoofdrol van Michelle Lemuya Ikeny brengt de film een urgente en hoopvolle boodschap.
