(NL Below) For the 20th edition of experimental art and short film program Glued & Screwed, wysiwyg has invited production house and art collective Touchy Studios to co-curate a program that explores masculinity from diverse and thoughtful perspectives. Aptly titled Touchy Men, the program features three short films by artists/filmmakers Verena Blok, Mateo Vega and Amanda van Hesteren. The screening will conclude with an excerpt from Boys Just Wanna Have Fun, a film by artist and member of Touchy Studios Jonathan Hielkema.
Some of the filmmakers will be present for a brief Q&A with Touchy Studios after the screening.

Robota (Poland, 2018, 12') by Verena Blok

Robota features lens-based artist Verena Blok—who doesn’t appear on screen herself—interacting with young Polish men as they discuss topics like politics, immigration and religion or share personal anecdotes from their lives. Interspersed with corporeal close-ups of their bare torsos as they engage in physical labor or go through seemingly mundane moments of their daily life, the film offers brief yet very striking moments of clarity and thought-provoking insights into the precariousness of (male) stereotypes and masculine (beauty) standards.
Incendios (The Netherlands, 2021, 7') by Mateo Vega

We follow the fictional story of two close friends spending their summer together after finishing secondary school. What is meant to be a relaxed and carefree time where the two friends bond and imagine their shared future, the relationship turns tense when one of them reveals they are forced to move away. Mateo Vega’s beautifully shot short film is an honest and powerful portrayal of teenage friendship, and a poignantly visceral exploration of unspoken feelings and the challenge of coming to terms with difficult news.
I Want to go Higher (Belgium, 2023, 23') by Amanda van Hesteren

Successful model Arjan van Hesteren goes on a month-long retreat in Thailand to escape the boozing and partying lifestyle of his profession, hoping to focus on self-improvement, relaxation, and Thai boxing after a difficult breakup. However, when three of his close friends - Jamal, Nino, and David - join him, their plans gradually unravel into lounging in luxury villas, chasing girls, and boasting about their physical appearances. Filmmaker (and sister) Amanda van Hesteren offers an uncompromising view of their exhilarating, uninhibited adventures, while simultaneously unveiling the insecurities, sensitivities, and emptiness underlying their lives - just as it does for all of us.
Boys Just Wanna Have Fun (Excerpt) (The Netherlands/Italy, 2022, 4') by Jonathan Hielkema

Jonathan Hielkema, artist and part of today’s co-curating collective Touchy Studio, will present an excerpt from his 2022 musical documentary Boys Just Wanna Have Fun. In his film, alter egos Jonny Toxic and Jacco Macho set out on a journey across Italy and The Netherlands to explore masculinity in contrasting cultural settings. Italy's shameless machismo and the frugal Calvinist-influenced Netherlands serve as backdrops for their introspective exploration of masculinity. Rather than relying on academic theories, they focus on personal experiences and the evolving nature of their own masculinity in these distinct cultures.
Voor de 20e editie van experimenteel kunst- en kortfilmprogramma Glued & Screwed heeft wysiwyg productiehuis en kunstcollectief Touchy Studios uitgenodigd om een programma samen te stellen dat mannelijkheid vanuit verschillende en doordachte perspectieven verkent. Het programma, met de toepasselijke titel Touchy Men, bevat drie korte films van kunstenaars/filmmakers Verena Blok, Mateo Vega en Amanda van Hesteren. De vertoning wordt afgesloten met een fragment uit Boys Just Wanna Have Fun, een film van kunstenaar en lid van Touchy Studios Jonathan Hielkema.
Sommige filmmakers zullen na de vertoning aanwezig zijn voor een korte Q&A met Touchy Studios.

Robota toont de lensgebaseerde kunstenares Verena Blok - die zelf niet op het scherm verschijnt - in interactie met jonge Poolse mannen terwijl ze onderwerpen als politiek, immigratie en religie bespreken of persoonlijke anekdotes uit hun leven delen. De film wordt afgewisseld met close-ups van hun ontblote torso's terwijl ze lichamelijk werk verrichten of schijnbaar alledaagse momenten uit hun dagelijks leven meemaken. De film biedt korte maar zeer opvallende momenten van helderheid en tot nadenken stemmende inzichten in de precariteit van (mannelijke) stereotypen en mannelijke (schoonheids)normen.

We volgen het fictieve verhaal van twee goede vrienden die samen de zomer doorbrengen na hun middelbare school. Wat bedoeld is als een ontspannen en zorgeloze tijd waarin de twee vrienden een band smeden en zich een voorstelling maken van hun gezamenlijke toekomst, verandert in een gespannen relatie wanneer een van hen onthult dat ze gedwongen zijn om te verhuizen. Mateo Vega's prachtig geschoten korte film is een eerlijk en krachtig portret van tienervriendschap en een aangrijpend visceraal onderzoek naar onuitgesproken gevoelens en de uitdaging om in het reine te komen met moeilijk nieuws.

Hij hoopt zich te kunnen richten op zelfverbetering, ontspanning en thaiboksen na een moeilijke relatiebreuk. Maar wanneer drie van zijn goede vrienden - Jamal, Nino en David - zich bij hem voegen, ontaarden hun plannen geleidelijk in loungen in luxe villa's, achter meisjes aanzitten en opscheppen over hun fysieke verschijning. Filmmaker (en zus) Amanda van Hesteren biedt een compromisloze kijk op hun opwindende, ongeremde avonturen, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd de onzekerheden, gevoeligheden en leegte onthult die aan hun leven ten grondslag liggen - net als bij ons allemaal.

Jonathan Hielkema, kunstenaar en onderdeel van het huidige co-curerende collectief Touchy Studio, presenteert een fragment uit zijn muzikale documentaire Boys Just Wanna Have Fun uit 2022. In zijn film gaan de alter ego's Jonny Toxic en Jacco Macho op reis door Italië en Nederland om mannelijkheid te onderzoeken in contrasterende culturele omgevingen. Het schaamteloze machismo van Italië en het zuinige Nederland met calvinistische invloeden dienen als achtergrond voor hun introspectieve verkenning van mannelijkheid. Ze baseren zich niet op academische theorieën, maar op persoonlijke ervaringen en de ontwikkeling van hun eigen mannelijkheid in deze verschillende culturen.

Kort experiment op het doek
Glued & Screwed is een project door screening platform wysiwyg in samenwerking met Filmhuis Den Haag. Deze filmavond dient als een platform voor experiment van (jonge) kunstenaars, ontwerpers en andere makers die met medium film werken. De films en visuele taal die missen in het reguliere filmlandschap krijgen juist hier podium en bieden de bezoekers uitdagende ervaringen.
Tijdens een nagesprek met makers in de zaal of bij de borrel beneden is er ruimte voor dialoog en kennismaking.
