Glued & Screwed #31

A 16mm experimental short film program marking the first-ever retrospective of New York-based filmmaker Ryan Marino in The Netherlands, and a world première of his latest film Obscured in Soft Light.

Continuing on the theme of Luminous Passage—where we celebrate the passage of time and light—this 31st edition of Glued & Screwed will be an extremely special one because New York-based artist and filmmaker Ryan Marino is flying over to our coastal city of The Hague with a suitcase full of 16mm prints! The evening will mark the first-ever retrospective of Ryan's work in The Netherlands, including a world première of his latest film Obscured in Soft Light. Included in the program are two films from the Dutch experimental film canon that were personally selected by Ryan. Also on 16mm film, and provided by EYE Archival loans, are Convalescing (1999) by Barbara Meter and #3 (1994) by Joost Rekveld.

Depths
Ryan Marino
US | 2020 | 5 Minutes | 16mm

Beginning in the depths of literal darkness, faint slivers of reflected light reveal the extrusions of cave walls and jagged cliff edges. Slowly emerging from this slumbering play of shadows, we are greeted by warmly cyan-colored images of thawing ice, and snow-covered mountains—landscapes that seem to sing softly of an imminent spring.

The Luminous Passage
Ryan Marino
US | 2010 | 6 Minutes | 16mm

A meditation on the passage of time and light, The Luminous Passage was provided the inspiration for the title of this program. The film contemplates landscapes, and seasonal shifts. The earth murmurs and sighs, while a choreography of plants and colored skies gradually unfolds.

Old Growth
Ryan Marino
US | 2014 | 8 Minutes | 16mm

Amid the arboreal giants and temperate organisms of a primeval rainforest lurks an elusive luminous force. Old Growth becomes an ominous exploration of primordial existence. Slightly overexposed and intensely saturated, the film dominates the senses with lush yellow tones, looming greens, and the distant wails of dark soil and ancient earth.

Radiant Forms
Ryan Marino
US | 2022 | 7 Minutes | 16mm

Like luminous forms merging in time. Unsuspecting flower beds and dense clusters of bushes are layered through superimposition, forming a visual dance. Close-ups of pillow-soft petals reveal the pollinating companions they shelter—quiet laborers sustaining life like unsung heroes. The film gently suggests something often overlooked: that behind the fibrous stature of our perennial neighbors lingers a fragile humanity and lively personality.

Obscured in Soft Light
Ryan Marino
US | 2025 | 8 Minutes | 16mm

Filmed over several months during the evening hours while all was quiet, the film explores the nocturnal resonances and traces of domesticity left dormant amid the stillness of night. Ryan Marino’s latest film offers an excitingly new and experimental direction in an oeuvre typically dominated by exploring nature’s psyche. The beauty of a flower, the silence of a tree, or the dormant stillness of a stone can make it difficult—almost absurd—to relate to nature as human beings. We are flawed, restless, noisy organisms. Yet Ryan’s work has the power to consistently narrow that distance, frame by frame, until the divide barely exists. In Obscured in Soft Light we encounter droplets of water gathering on black pipes, gradients of light dispersed across a cabinet, and small ornaments twirling in mid-air. Here Marino turns his attention to something perhaps even more distant from us than nature: the realm of domestic materials and manufactured environments. The droplets result from condensation. The light from reflection. The spinning from mechanical force. Not nature, not movement, not life. And yet something resembling life quietly emerges from these surfaces and gestures.

The Visible Material
Ryan Marino
US | 2024 | 8 Minutes | 16mm

Through means of rephotography and refracted projection, the movements and luminescent surfaces of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz are transformed into vibrant fields of moving color. Under the curious gaze of Ryan Marino’s camera, the recognizable features of the location dissolve almost entirely. What remains is not the square itself, but offers something much more elusive and meaningful—its atmosphere, perhaps even its soul.

Half-Light
Ryan Marino
US | 2023 | 10 Minutes | 16mm

Shot over a period of three years in a single interior space, this film explores sensory perception through the textural surface of expired film stock, light and layered images. Ephemeral moments meld into voids of grain.

Convalescing
Barbara Meter
NL | 2000 | 3 Minutes | 16mm

Convalescing is when you do not have to participate in the world. Time to take a look at how much it is worth to be able to read, to dream, and to watch.

#3
Joost Rekveld
NL | 1994 | 4 Minutes | 16mm

#3 is a film with pure light, in which the images were created by recording the movements of a tiny lightsource with extremely long exposures, so that it draws traces on the emulsion. The light is part of a simple mechanical system that exhibits chaotic behaviour.

Glued & Screwed

Short experiment on the screen

Glued & Screwed is a project by screening platform wysiwyg in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag. This film evening serves as a platform for experimentation by (young) artists, designers and other makers working with the medium of film. The films and visual language that are missing in the regular film landscape are given a stage here and offer visitors challenging experiences.

During a discussion with the makers in the hall or during the drinks in the cafe there is space for dialogue and getting acquainted.
