Glued & Screwed #25

Curated with and around the work of visual artist and researcher Adele Dipasquale, this celebratory 25th edition of Glued & Screwed features five poetically charged films about language.

Curated with and around the work of visual artist and researcher Adele Dipasquale, this celebratory 25th edition of Glued & Screwed presents five films that continue last month’s theme of Language and Heritage. Alongside two works from Adele’s oeuvre, we’re honored to host an exclusive first viewing of footage that she shot over the summer in preparation for a new project titled l’infestata—produced by Fondazione Elpis, a space dedicated to artistic experimentation and research in Milan.

The sneak peek, Notes for l’infestata, features some beautifully poetic 16mm imagery filmed in the town of Abruzzo, nestled within the mountainous region of east-central Italy. Contextualizing her work are two films personally selected by Adele: the abstract experimental video piece Mouth to Mouth (1975) by artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (KR), and the resolutely feminist work I Hope I’m Loud When I’m Dead (2018) from seminal filmmaker Beatrice Gibson (UK).

This edition we will screen the following films:

Mouth to Mouth (Korea, 1975, 8') by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha

English and Korean words appear on the screen, a mouth forms the shape of an "O," then opens and closes. Is this the beginning of language? In this early videotape, Cha isolates and repeats a simple, physical act — a mouth forming the eight Korean vowel graphemes — so that this ordinary action becomes something primal and riveting.

Farfallino (The Netherlands, 2020, 7') by Adele Dipasquale

The film explores the ‘Farfallino’ language, a coded version of Italian used by children to secretly communicate between each other. In Italian, literally, farfallino means "language of butterflies", from the animal’s noun farfalla. The work starts from the proposition of an unintelligible communication capable of transpassing species through incomprehension. While employing mechanism of exclusion and inclusion, languages creates separatisms and possible alliances.

Lose Voice Toolkit (Italy, The Netherlands, 2024, 18') by Adele Dipasquale

In an undefinable place and time we see a group of children who don’t use words anymore. They might have lost them due to powerful voice-stealing magnets, or dissolved by lose-voice candies. The words seem to be lost, forgotten somewhere. So,they start to transform and develop a new system of communicating made of aerial forms, sharp gazes or shared thoughts. Looking at them, one would think that they would speak with their noses, their elbows, their pupils. The film is the result of a one-year workshop and collective research with the children of Farfallopoli (1B IC Gino Strada, Torino); the content, the script and the costumes are the result of this collaborative process.

Notes for L'infestata (Italy, The Netherlands, 10') by Adele Dipasquale

Notes for l’infestata, features some beautifully poetic 16mm imagery filmed near the village of Roccacaramanico, nestled within the mountainous region of Abruzzo, in east-central Italy. This will mark an exclusive first viewing of footage that Adele shot over the summer in preparation for a new project titled l’infestata—a continuation of a commission of art in public spaces in small villages, produced by Fondazione Elpis in collaboration with Galleria Continua and Threes Productions, presented in occasion of Una Boccata d’Arte 2025.

I Hope I’m Loud When I’m Dead (United Kingdom, 2018, 20') by Beatrice Gibson

By turns raucous and reserved, I Hope I’m Loud When I’m Dead ponders the future of a world in flux as seen through the eyes of motherhood accented by poets CAConrad and Eileen Myles.

Glued & Screwed

Short experiment on the screen

Glued & Screwed is a project by screening platform wysiwyg in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag. This film evening serves as a platform for experimentation by (young) artists, designers and other makers working with the medium of film. The films and visual language that are missing in the regular film landscape are given a stage here and offer visitors challenging experiences.

During a discussion with the makers in the hall or during the drinks in the cafe there is space for dialogue and getting acquainted.
