Glued & Screwed

Excited for a night full of experimentation and visual innovative stories all around film? Then join the film nights Glued & Screwed of screeningplatform wysiwyg in Filmhuis Den Haag.

Short experiment on the screen

Glued & Screwed is organised by experimental screeningplatforms and is as film night a platform for experiments for (young) artists, designers and other creators, international as well as local. Especially, the films that are missed in the regular film environments are offered a stage here. Think of it as a journey to a more experimental environments, an exploration of visual vocabularies.

Within the walls of the cinema, multiple shorter films merge into a single theme. Take the theme of dreams, for example—hallucinatory images that the viewer moves through. Observing, holding your breath, interpreting, and sometimes letting go. From a dizzying flood of images to just one frame on repeat. Where the first film might subconsciously put you into a surreal dream state, the final film suddenly snaps you out of your meditative awareness, back into the cinema hall.

Questions around form, narrative, and visual language are not avoided: what is real, and what is not? Glued & Screwed makes room for creators who don’t necessarily present themselves as filmmakers, but use the form of film as a medium for their art projects. “For them, the form of film is a subtopic,” says organizer Mike. “They see it more as a kind of research: what does the camera mean to me?”

Experimentation is central, for example in Southern Bypass: 5.49–6am by Christopher Tym: “My films always take place in the same location. I want to unconsciously guide the viewer’s attention and awareness. You see something centered on the screen, and everything around it starts to move. That estranging feeling makes time itself begin to blur. It’s almost meditative.” For Tym, a short film is also a study: “It was a test, and I’m curious about how viewers react. Do they get irritated, or does it actually have a calming effect?”

During a post-screening discussion with the creators in the cinema hall or at the drinks downstairs, there is space for dialogue and interpretation. Pack your suitcase, and travel along into new, experimental landscapes on the screen.
