U Are the Universe is a unique love story about a lonely Ukrainian space trucker’s unexpected encounter with a French scientist, exploring existential emptiness and the unexpected tenderness within contradictions.
U Are the Universe is a love story unlike any other – after Earth explodes, a lonely Ukrainian space trucker Andriy believes he is the only survivor until a French scientist Catherine appears on the radio. Despite all the obstacles, Andriy decides to meet her.
Ukrainian critic Serhii Ksaverov:
‘What if you were the last person in the universe, doomed to a lonely, miserable existence in a shabby space garbage truck, floating somewhere between Jupiter and eternity? Pavlo Ostrikov’s debut, expectedly, explores the theme of existential emptiness, but it employs a main character who appears content with the notion that the rest of humanity was eliminated in one catastrophic blow – until he realizes he is not truly alone.
Cinematic space journeys rarely stray from the formula of a mission-driven hero overcoming obstacles. U Are the Universe plays with this very framework but does so in an offbeat and, dare I say, distinctly Ukrainian way. Its protagonist, almost proverbially so, embodies a dazzling mix of contradictions, possessing the rare ability to both irritate and amuse. Yet, it is precisely within these contradictions that the film discovers its tenderness and heart, making for a journey that defies expectations.’
U Are the Universe is een liefdesverhaal zoals geen ander – nadat de Aarde is geëxplodeerd, gelooft de eenzame Oekraïense ruimtechauffeur Andriy dat hij de enige overlevende is, tot er plotseling een Franse wetenschapper, Catherine, via de radio verschijnt. Ondanks alle obstakels besluit Andriy haar op te zoeken.
Oekraïense criticus Serhii Ksaverov:
‘Wat als jij de laatste persoon in het universum was, veroordeeld tot een eenzaam, ellendig bestaan in een aftandse ruimteschroottruck, zwevend ergens tussen Jupiter en de eeuwigheid? Het debuut van Pavlo Ostrikov verkent – zoals verwacht – het thema van existentiële leegte, maar doet dit aan de hand van een hoofdpersonage dat zich opmerkelijk comfortabel lijkt te voelen bij het idee dat de rest van de mensheid in één catastrofale klap is uitgeroeid – totdat hij beseft dat hij niet echt alleen is.
Filmische ruimtereizen wijken zelden af van de formule van een held met een missie die obstakels overwint. U Are the Universe speelt met precies die structuur, maar doet dit op een eigenzinnige en, mag ik wel zeggen, uitgesproken Oekraïense manier. De protagonist belichaamt, bijna spreekwoordelijk, een schitterende mix van tegenstellingen, met het zeldzame vermogen om zowel te irriteren als te vermaken. Juist in die tegenstellingen vindt de film zijn tederheid en hart, en ontstaat een reis die alle verwachtingen tart.’

Kyiv Critics' Week is one of Ukraine’s most prominent film festivals, showcasing the best of world cinema to local audiences, selected and presented by professional Ukrainian film critics.
Last year in Amsterdam, De Balie initiated a unique collaboration with the critics of KCW, resulting in a three-day event that brought highlights of Ukrainian cinema to the Netherlands. This year, under the name KCW x NL, the project is expanding to Rotterdam and The Hague, with the goal to include broader Dutch audiences and Ukrainian diaspora from different cities.

Kyiv Critics' Week is een van de meest prominente filmfestivals in Oekraïne, waar het beste van de wereldcinema aan het lokale publiek wordt getoond, geselecteerd en gepresenteerd door professionele Oekraïense filmcritici. Vorig jaar initieerde De Balie in Amsterdam een unieke samenwerking met de critici van KCW, met als resultaat een driedaags evenement dat hoogtepunten uit de Oekraïense cinema naar Nederland bracht. Dit jaar breidt het project onder de naam KCW x NL uit naar Rotterdam en Den Haag, met als doel een breder Nederlands publiek en Oekraïense diaspora uit verschillende steden te bereiken.
