Toxic won de Gouden Luipaard op het filmfestival van Locarno en ging daar ook met de prijs voor het beste debuut strijken.
Twee tieners willen ontsnappen aan hun grauwe Litouwse industriestad en worden hechte vriendinnen op een sinistere modellenschool. Hier wordt ze een beter leven beloofd maar daarvoor moeten ze wel hun lichaam op steeds extremere manieren toetakelen.
In de afgebrokkelde industriële buitenwijken van Kaunas in Litouwen wordt de dertienjarige Marija (Vesta Matulytė) genadeloos gepest omdat ze mank loop. Nadat ze door een onverschillige moeder bij haar oma is gedumpt, wordt Marija, samen met de opstandige Kristina (Ieva Rupeikaitė), opgepikt door een van de vele obscure Litouwse modellenscholen die slanke jonge meisjes uit uitzichtloze plekken een uitweg naar een beter leven beloven.
Uiteraard moeten ze eerst alles zelf betalen – foto's, trainingen, vluchten naar het buitenland – maar bovenal moeten ze dun blijven. Kristina heeft gelezen hoe je dat doet, slank blijven: door een lintworm in te slikken. De meiden, inmiddels bondgenoten, zijn bereid alles met hun lichaam te doen om maar aan hun lot te ontsnappen.

Two teenagers want to escape their bleak Lithuanian industrial town and become close friends at a sinister modeling school. There, they are promised a better life—but only if they subject their bodies to increasingly extreme abuse.
In the crumbling industrial outskirts of Kaunas, Lithuania, thirteen-year-old Marija (Vesta Matulytė) is mercilessly bullied for limping. After being dumped by her indifferent mother at her grandmother’s house, Marija, along with the rebellious Kristina (Ieva Rupeikaitė), is picked up by one of the many obscure Lithuanian modeling schools that promise slender young girls from hopeless places a way out to a better life.
Of course, they have to pay for everything themselves—photos, training, flights abroad—but above all, they must stay thin. Kristina has read about how to do that: by swallowing a tapeworm. The girls, now allies, are willing to do anything to their bodies to escape their fate.
Toxic won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and also took home the award for Best Debut.
