After several years in Taiwan, Ah Yao returns to Malaysia for his father’s funeral, expecting a quiet Taoist ceremony. Things take an unexpected turn when religious authorities intervene, claiming his father—who secretly converted to Islam—must be buried in an Islamic cemetery. Determined to honour their ancestral traditions, Ah Yao and his siblings embark on a darkly comical and unpredictable quest to reclaim the body, unearthing family secrets, cultural tensions, and a series of absurd challenges.
Delicately weaving past and present, The Waves Will Carry Us traces a diasporic history that begins with migration from China generations earlier and culminates in settlement and family life in Malaysia. The film opens an urgent conversation about systemic discrimination and citizenship, questioning whether displays of patriotism and assimilation truly matter, or whether it is how families hold together that ultimately defines belonging. With warmth and wit, this family tale reflects on the meaning of home, belonging, and migration.

Na jaren in Taiwan keert Ah Yao terug naar Maleisië voor de begrafenis van zijn vader. Wat een ingetogen taoïstische ceremonie had moeten worden, neemt een onverwachte wending wanneer religieuze autoriteiten ingrijpen: zijn vader blijkt zich in het geheim tot de islam te hebben bekeerd en moet op een islamitische begraafplaats worden begraven. Vastbesloten hun voorouderlijke tradities te eren, beginnen Ah Yao en zijn broer en zus aan een duister-komische missie om het lichaam terug te krijgen. Hun tocht ontspoort in een reeks absurde situaties, waarin culturele spanningen en lang verborgen familiegeheimen naar boven komen.
The Waves Will Carry Us verweeft heden en verleden tot een gelaagde diasporische geschiedenis die generaties geleden begint met migratie uit China en uitmondt in een nieuw bestaan in Maleisië. De film stelt urgente vragen over systemische discriminatie en burgerschap: en stelt de vraag of loyaliteit aan de staat en aanpassing werkelijk bepalend zijn, of dat verbondenheid binnen families uiteindelijk zwaarder weegt? Met warmte en humor reflecteert deze film op de betekenis van thuis, identiteit en migratie.
