The Secret Agent
In het broeierige Brazilië van 1977 vecht Marcelo, op de vlucht voor de dictatuur, in Recife om zijn zoon en identiteit, terwijl de stad onder carnaval verandert in een gevaarlijk web van geweld, corruptie en paranoia.
Brazilië, 1977. Marcelo, technologie-expert en weduwnaar, is op de vlucht. Terwijl de militaire dictatuur steeds wredere maatregelen oplegt aan de bevolking komt hij aan in Recife, waar hij zich hoopt te herenigen met zijn zoontje. Daar, tijdens de carnavalsweek, vindt hij een onderkomen bij een groep gelijkgestemden en neemt hij een valse identiteit aan. Maar Marcelo’s situatie is penibeler dan hij doorheeft: al snel beseft hij zich dat de stad verre van het geweldloze toevluchtsoord is dat hij zoekt.
The Secret Agent is een broeierige politieke thriller van regisseur Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau, Aquarius), die met zijn nieuwste werk een tumultueuze periode uit de Braziliaanse geschiedenis tot leven brengt. Aan de hand van verschillende verhaallijnen toont hij een land verstrikt in geweld, corruptie en vendetta’s, een onstuimig jaren ’70 zorgvuldig opgebouwd uit eigen herinneringen, familiegeschiedenissen en archiefmateriaal. Met een mix van stijlen - spanning, humor én zelfs een vleugje horror - is de The Secret Agent niet alleen een meeslepende filmervaring, maar ook een tijdsdocument waarmee de veelgeprezen Mendonça Filho een scherpe analyse maakt van het heden en verleden van Brazilië. Dat The Secret Agent onder de huid kruipt, weet ook de internationale filmgemeenschap: het werd de meest bekroonde film in Cannes (Beste Regie, Beste Acteur), belandde in menig ‘best of-lijsten’ en dingt nog mee in verschillende Oscarcategorieën, mede door het fenomenale acteerwerk van hoofdrolspeler Wagner Moura.
Op 9 februari presenteren we een speciale preview van The Secret Agent, samen met Las Américas Film Festival, dat in mei terugkeert naar Filmhuis. LAFF-programmeurs Feargal Agard en Alejandra Ortiz zullen de voor een Oscar genomineerde film inleiden als onderdeel van het Latijns-Amerikaanse filmlandschap.
Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert and widower, is on the run. As the military dictatorship imposes increasingly cruel measures on the population, he arrives in Recife, where he hopes to reunite with his young son. There, during carnival week, he finds shelter with a group of like-minded people and assumes a false identity. But Marcelo's situation is more precarious than he realises: he soon realises that the city is far from the peaceful refuge he is looking for.
The Secret Agent is a sultry political thriller by director Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau, Aquarius), who brings a tumultuous period in Brazilian history to life with his latest work. Through various storylines, he shows a country entangled in violence, corruption and vendettas, a turbulent 1970s carefully constructed from his own memories, family histories and archive material. With a mix of styles – suspense, humour and even a touch of horror – The Secret Agent is not only a compelling cinematic experience, but also a document of its time, in which the acclaimed Mendonça Filho offers a sharp analysis of Brazil's past and present. The international film community also recognises that The Secret Agent gets under your skin: it was the most awarded film at Cannes (Best Director, Best Actor), ended up on many “best of” lists and is still in the running for several Oscar categories, partly thanks to the phenomenal acting of lead actor Wagner Moura.
On February 9th, we present a special preview of The Secret Agent together with Las Américas Film Festival, which will return to Filmhuis in May. LAFF programmers Feargal Agard and Alejandra Ortiz will introduce the Oscar-nominated film as part of the Latin American cinematic landscape.
