Na de mysterieuze dood van zijn oude partner tijdens het filmen van een documentaire, stelt de beroemde maar tanende oceanograaf Steve Zissou een eigenzinnige bemanning samen om op jacht te gaan naar de ongrijpbare ‘jaguaarhaai’ die volgens hem verantwoordelijk is.
