The Last Angel of History + Zombies - Black Achievement Month
Two films that trace Afrofuturism across music, technology, history and visions of the future.
This program consists of the follow two films:
Zombies (Baloji, 2019): A journey between hope and dystopia in a hallucinated Kinshasa, from the culture of the hair salon to futuristic solitary clubbing, from an urban parade to a dictator's sense of glory to a modern western in the style of Takeshi Kitano.
The Last Angel of History (John Akomfrah, 1996): A time travelling figure known as the Data Thief journeys across space and time in search of fragments of history, technology and a code that might reveal his future. Blending documentary interviews, archival footage and a fictional narrative, the film traces connections between Black music, science fiction and the African diaspora. From spirituals and funk to techno and Afrofuturism, musicians, writers and thinkers explore how Black culture has imagined alternative futures and reclaimed its history.

Zombies (Baloji, 2019): Een reis tussen hoop en dystopie in een hallucinerend Kinshasa, van de cultuur van de kapsalon tot futuristisch solodansen in clubs, van een stedelijke parade en het gevoel voor grandeur van een dictator tot een moderne western in de stijl van Takeshi Kitano.
The Last Angel of History (John Akomfrah, 1996): Een tijdreizende figuur, bekend als de Data Thief, reist door ruimte en tijd op zoek naar fragmenten van geschiedenis, technologie en een code die de sleutel tot zijn toekomst kan bevatten. Door documentaire interviews, archiefbeelden en een fictief verhaal te combineren, legt de film verbanden tussen zwarte muziek, sciencefiction en de Afrikaanse diaspora. Archives of Tomorrow - Black Achievement Month
This October, Filmhuis Den Haag and Black Achievement Month presents Archives of Tomorrow, a programme exploring Afrofuturism and the many ways Black artists imagine, challenge and reshape the future. Bringing together films that range from cosmic jazz and cyberpunk to ancestral worlds, comic book adaptations and surreal musical time travel, the programme explores how film can open up new possibilities for seeing the present differently. Rather than offering a single definition of Afrofuturism, the programme celebrates its diverse forms, histories and visions, and the role of Black creativity in shaping possible futures.
