The Color of Armenian Land (Mikhail Vartanov, 1969)
A meditative visual essay that maps Armenian history, spirituality, and identity onto landscapes and architectural forms. Through images of stone, light, and ritual, the film reflects on cultural continuity and loss. It approaches cinema as a space for memory rather than narration.
The Colour of Pomegranates (Sergei Parajanov, 1969)
A landmark of poetic cinema that reimagines the life of poet Sayat-Nova as a series of symbolic visions. Parajanov replaces plot with ritualised imagery, drawing on Armenian art, music, and religious iconography. The film invites the viewer to experience cinema as living poetry.
This double bill will be introduced by Martiros Vartanov, heir to filmmaker Mikhail Vartanov and director of the Vartanov–Parajanov Institute.
