After losing her parents and their land, May lives with her grandfather in a self-sustaining floating house on the sea. She dreams of living on land, but a mysterious condition makes her faint whenever she tries to set foot on land. That is why her grandfather, believing she is cursed by their ancestors, insists that she should never leave their home. Although the land has become a dangerous place for her, she keeps being drawn to it. When her grandfather gets hurt and she is haunted by the uncertainty of a seabound life, life on land calls louder than ever before.
Tale of the Land is director Loeloe HENDRA’s first feature film. Visually stunning with its surreal, dreamlike imagery and mystical elements, the film touches on themes such as climate change, land theft, and capitalist developments in a symbolic and poetic way.
Na het verlies van haar ouders en hun land, woont May samen met haar opa in een zelfvoorzienend huis drijvend op water. Ze droomt van een leven op land maar door een mysterieuze aandoening valt ze flauw zodra ze vaste grond betreedt. Haar opa, overtuigd dat ze vervloekt is door hun voorouders, verbiedt haar om het huis te verlaten. Hoewel het vaste land voor haar een gevaarlijke plek is geworden, blijft May zich ertoe aangetrokken voelen. Wanneer haar opa gewond raakt en ze wordt gekweld door de onzekerheid van een leven op zee, is het verlangen om aan land te gaan sterker dan ooit.
Tale of the Land is de eerste speelfilm van regisseur Loeloe HENDRA. Visueel verbluffend met droomachtige, surrealistische beelden en mystieke elementen, kaart de film op een symbolische en poëtische manier thema’s als klimaatverandering, landroof en kapitalisme aan.
