Bill Gunn
STUDIO F presents: Ganja & Hess
An experimental horror film in which vampirism becomes a lens through which to explore Black identity, spirituality and cultural history.
Anthropologist and museum curator Dr. Hess Green is wounded when his assistant stabs him with an ancient ritual dagger. In the aftermath, Hess discovers that he has developed an insatiable thirst for blood. When his assistant disappears, Hess becomes involved with Ganja, the man's wife, who is searching for her missing husband. As their relationship deepens, they are drawn closer to one another and to the dark secrets behind Hess's transformation. In this experimental horror film, director Bill Gunn combines vampire mythology with themes of religion, identity and African American history. The film invites viewers to explore how horror can do more than provoke fear, revealing cultural beliefs, social dynamics and ideas about what it means to be human.
The screening will be preceded by a lecture by Edward Akintola Hubbard, an anthropologist, artist and curator. Drawing on the film's unusual production history and its treatment of Blackness, class and desire, he will explore how Gunn transforms the vampire genre into a vehicle for social and cultural critique. Hubbard holds a PhD in Anthropology from Harvard University and is co-founder and Artistic Director of DARKMATTER Collective. He is also a Tutor in Audiovisual Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. His research has also explored the intersections of anthropology and horror cinema, examining how the genre both reproduces and challenges the discipline's historical assumptions about cultural difference and otherness.
studio F
Every year, thousands of students, from primary school to university, step inside Filmhuis Den Haag to take part in our educational programmes. In our cinema rooms and dedicated learning spaces, Studio B and C, they explore the world of film beyond the screen. Until now, these programmes have been exclusively for students. But that’s about to change.
Starting October '26, Filmhuis Den Haag launches Studio F, a new monthly programme opening up the world of film education to everyone. Each month, our education team invites special guests to join them in exploring a (modern) classic through a different theme or perspective. From filmmaking techniques and the creative process to the stories, ideas and questions that films bring to life, Studio F goes beyond the screening to discover what cinema can teach us about ourselves and the world around us.
Forget everything you think you know about (film) education. This is Studio F. Click here to find out more.
