Space is the Place - Black Achievement Month
Sun Ra descends on Oakland with a spaceship, a band and an audacious plan to build a new world beyond Earth.
After travelling through space and time, avant-garde musician Sun Ra returns to Earth with a plan to offer African Americans a new home on a utopian planet. In Oakland, he recruits people for his space colony while challenging the sinister Overseer, who seeks to control their destiny. Their conflict culminates in a cosmic battle over the future of the Black community.
On October 26th, Dr. Lenore Todd, lecturer at Leiden University College, introduces Space Is the Place, exploring Sun Ra’s radical vision of Black identity, art and the future.
Avant-garde jazzmuzikant Sun Ra keert na een reis door ruimte en tijd terug naar de aarde met een plan om Afro-Amerikanen een nieuw thuis te bieden op een utopische planeet. In Oakland probeert hij mensen voor zijn ruimtekolonie te winnen, terwijl hij het opneemt tegen de sinistere Overseer, die hun lot wil bepalen. Hun conflict mondt uit in een kosmische strijd om de toekomst van de zwarte gemeenschap.
Op 26 oktober zal Dr. Lenore Todd, docent aan Leiden University College, Space Is the Place introduceren en gaat zij in op Sun Ra’s radicale visie op zwarte identiteit, kunst en de toekomst.
Archives of Tomorrow - Black Achievement Month
This October, Filmhuis Den Haag and Black Achievement Month presents Archives of Tomorrow, a programme exploring Afrofuturism and the many ways Black artists imagine, challenge and reshape the future. Bringing together films that range from cosmic jazz and cyberpunk to ancestral worlds, comic book adaptations and surreal musical time travel, the programme explores how film can open up new possibilities for seeing the present differently. Rather than offering a single definition of Afrofuturism, the programme celebrates its diverse forms, histories and visions, and the role of Black creativity in shaping possible futures.
