Sound As A Protagonist #2

Sound As A Protagonist is a program series curated by wysiwyg and Amsterdam-based arts organization Sonic Acts. Attempting to explore the parasitic "nature" of progress and urban life without judgement, the program lets the body feel and intuition lead us to places the mind won't go.

Sound As A Protagonist is a program series curated by wysiwyg and Amsterdam-based arts organization Sonic Acts. This second edition in the series attempts to explore the parasitic "nature" of progress and urban life without judgement, letting the body feel and intuition lead us to places the mind won't go.

Addressing subjects that are often considered to stand in direct contrast to nature and the existence of being, the program gathers works by artists, filmmakers, and musicians that place listening at the core—treating it as a mode of storytelling, immersion, and attention—the selection ranges across films, compositions, and standalone sound pieces. From the crackles of distant fires to hidden infrasonic vibrations that pulse beneath everyday life, audiences are invited into a sensorial exploration of cinema beyond the visual.

Founded in 1994, Sonic Acts has become internationally recognized through its Biennial and year-round initiatives, including publications, residencies, and commissions. With a focus on sound art, ecology, and technology, its curatorial practice often investigates the porous thresholds between human and more-than-human worlds, complicating simple divisions between nature and culture.

Sound artist BJ Nilsen will be present at the screening for an in-depth conversation and Q&A regarding his featured audio-piece ORE and his practice.

Rhadinace (United Kingdom, 2024, 8') by Fergus Carmichael

With their wells depleted, offshore platforms await decommissioning, while on land, oil burns in an annual ritual. Rhadinace builds on previous explorations of socio-ecological relationships, investigating an oil rig ‘graveyard’ in northern Scotland and the surrounding community. Through a partly fictionalised account of the Clavie burning, the film weaves together industry and tradition. Its score and pacing deliberately evoke echoes of eco and folk horror cinema, heightening the tension between extraction, mythology, and the natural world.

ORE (audio-piece) (Netherlands, Russia, Norway, 2019, 15') by BJ Nilsen

ORE is a composition by Swedish sound artist BJ Nilsen that investigates the acoustic dimensions of mining. Developed over four years, it incorporates field recordings from iron ore and coal mining sites in Norway, Russia, and the Netherlands.

Refined during a residency at Ina GRM in Paris, the piece explores the societal and cultural impacts of mineral extraction. With its hypnotic, droning quality, ORE captures the mechanistic rhythms of mining operations – momentous and industrial, yet also profoundly musical. Nilsen masterfully weaves the mechanical and the organic, crafting a sonic experience that is as evocative as it is immersive.

The edition featured in this program is part of a larger extended version of the piece.

AS DUST, AS RAIN, AS A LINE ON THE MAP AND A CRACK IN HISTORY (Albania, 2022, 9') by Huniti Goldox

Cities, like water, encounter strong currents and shocks. As tidings of wars, attacks and earthquakes crack the ground apart, narratives slip beneath the surface. To make way for their interventions, neoliberal economic policies exploit fear and disorientation, generating a steady stream of disasters before wiping the slate clean and starting over. But when the old submerges with amnesia isn’t salvaging whatever there is, repairing what wasn’t destroyed and letting things stay a little longer that keeps one oriented and out of shock?

“As Dust, as Rain, as a Line on The Map and a Crack in History” is a contextual artistic research project that has a magical realism plot that reflects on the state of the present while unveiling vulnerable landscapes and societies and their entangled relationships.

TWO SUNS (United States, 2005, 24') by Paul Clipson

TWO SUNS is a 24-minute super 8 film from the late Paul Clipson—passionate projectionist, artist, experimental filmmaker, and collaborator. The film is a riveting and elusive sequence of blurry, grainy, and abstract impressions of California’s urban landscape(s), shot through a lens steeped in curiosity and metaphysical tenderness. It gazes at the parasitic “nature” of progress and city-life without judgement.

Driven by the intense musical compositions of multi-instrumentalist and ambient/experimental musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, TWO SUNS is the audio-visual equivalent of a transcendental meditation experience beamed directly into your eyeballs. Pure consciousness blooms from the confines of the black box.

Special thanks to Yelena Soboleva and Anya Kamenskaya, who entrusted us with this rare digital version of the film—transferred from super 8 through high-res video projection by Clipson himself in 2005.
