Director KONAKA Kazuya’s semi-autobiographical love letter to the old days of analogue filmmaking, centred around a high school cinephile who teams up with his classmates to make his no-budget science fiction masterpiece for a class project.
In the summer of 1978, high school student Hiroshi, who is crazy about Star Wars, builds a miniature spaceship with his friend Yoshio and begins filming it with an 8mm camera. In order to complete it as a full movie, Hiroshi proposes it as the class's cultural festival project. He and his friends come up with a science fiction love story called “Time Reverse,” where aliens attempt to reverse Earth's time and redo human evolution, inspired by the reverse shooting function of their camera. But will Hiroshi’s crush Natsumi accept the lead role?
A nostalgic, feel-good comedy that harkens back to director KONAKA Kazuya’s early days as a teenage filmmaker, Single8 celebrates youth, creativity, and the life-changing possibilities of cinema. It is a welcome addition to the Japanese film-within-a-film genre in the likes of One Cut of the Dead (2017). By focusing on the Single 8 camera and analogue filmmaking, Konaka adds a refreshing and joyful contribution to the long list of films celebrating filmmaking.
In de zomer van 1978 bouwt middelbare scholier Hiroshi, die helemaal gek is van Star Wars, samen met zijn vriend Yoshio een miniatuur ruimteschip dat hij filmt met een 8mm-camera. Om het af te maken als volledige film, stelt Hiroshi voor om het als een schoolproject voor het culturele festival te gebruiken. Samen met zijn vrienden bedenkt hij een sciencefiction-liefdesverhaal genaamd “Time Reverse,” waarin aliens proberen de tijd op aarde terug te draaien en de menselijke evolutie over te doen, geïnspireerd door de terugspoelfunctie van hun camera. Maar zal Hiroshi’s crush, Natsumi, de hoofdrol accepteren?
Een nostalgische, feelgood-komedie die terugblikt op de vroege dagen van regisseur KONAKA Kazuya als jeugdige filmer. Single8 viert jeugd, creativiteit en de levensveranderende mogelijkheden van cinema. Het is een welkome toevoeging aan het Japanse film-in-een-filmgenre, zoals One Cut of the Dead (2017). Door de focus te leggen op de Single 8-camera en analoge filmmaken, voegt Konaka een verfrissende en vreugdevolle bijdrage toe aan de lange lijst van films die het filmmaken vieren.
