In het hart van een botanische tuin in een middeleeuwse universiteitsstad in Duitsland staat een gigantische ginkgoboom. Deze stille getuige observeert al meer dan een eeuw meerdere mensenlevens. In 1908 is Grete de eerste vrouwelijke student op haar Duitse universiteit. Onverstoorbaar vindt ze haar roeping: niet in de biologie, maar in fotografie. Vierenzestig jaar later wordt Hannes verliefd op een plantkunde student. Terwijl hij een project voor haar proefschrift in de gaten moet houden, begint hij een tamelijk ongebruikelijke relatie – met een geranium. En tot slot, tijdens de corona lockdowns van 2020, komt neurowetenschapper Tony uit Hongkong vast te zitten in de verlaten universiteitswoningen. We volgen hun pogingen tot verbinding, terwijl ze worden getransformeerd door de mysterieuze kracht van de natuur.

In the heart of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany stands a giant ginkgo tree. This silent witness has been observing multiple human lives for over a century. In 1908, Grete is the first female student at her German university. Unperturbed, she finds her calling: not in biology, but in photography. Sixty-four years later, Hannes falls in love with a botany student. While tasked with keeping an eye on a project for her dissertation, he begins a rather unusual relationship—with a geranium. And finally, during the corona lockdowns of 2020, neuroscientist Tony from Hong Kong finds himself trapped in the abandoned university residences. We follow their attempts at connection as they are transformed by the mysterious power of nature.

Sometimes a film filled to the brim with explosions, car chases and shootouts can be incredibly boring. On the other hand, this week we screen an extremely exciting film about caring for plants.
'Silent Friend' caused my favourite cinema moment of the year so far: a crowd of 300 people at IFFR positively GASPING when one of the characters almost gave too much water to a geranium. That is the power of true cinema.
