Silent Flood
Silent Flood volgt een pacifistische Oekraïense geloofsgemeenschap die, wanneer de oorlog binnendringt, noodgedwongen haar strenge regels moet loslaten en samenwerkt met de buitenwereld.
De Oekraïense documentaire Silent Flood vertelt het verhaal van een gesloten religieuze gemeenschap – vergelijkbaar met de Amish – wiens vredige bestaan onder druk komt te staan door de Russische invasie. De film toont hoe deze pacifistische gemeenschap omgaat met oorlog, zonder ooit een soldaat in gevecht te tonen.
De religieuze gemeenschap – ook wel bekend als ‘kashketniky’ – woont in een prachtig landschap, waar ooit de frontlinies van zowel de Eerste als Tweede Wereldoorlog liepen. Hier aan de rivier Dnjestr leven de dorpsbewoners volgens hun eigen strenge regels, afgesloten van de buitenwereld. Ze maken geen gebruik van elektriciteit of moderne geneeskunde, trouwen niet buiten de gemeenschap en mogen niet het leger in.
De pogingen van de gemeenschap om de buitenwereld op afstand te houden worden verstoord door de jaarlijkse overstromingen die alles op hun pad meesleuren. Als een nog verwoestender „overstroming“ Oekraïne overvalt, laat de oorlog met Rusland de gemeenschap geen andere keuze dan geleidelijk aan hun regels te overtreden. Ze gaan samenwerken met de buitenwereld om op hun eigen manier te helpen in de strijd tegen de gezamenlijke vijand.
Silent Flood won op IDFA 2025 de award voor Beste Cinematografie in de Internationale Competitie.
De documentaire werd geselecteerd voor gerenommeerde festivals als Hot Docs Toronto 2026, CPH:DOX Kopenhagen 2026, One World Praag 2026, Göteborg Film Festival 2025 en Munich International Documentary Film Festival 2026.
The Ukrainian documentary Silent Flood tells the story of a closed religious community—similar to the Amish—whose peaceful existence comes under pressure due to the Russian invasion. The film shows how this pacifist community copes with war, without ever showing a soldier in combat.
The religious community—also known as ‘Kashketniky’—lives in a beautiful landscape where the front lines of both the First and Second World Wars once ran. Here on the Dniester River, the villagers live according to their own strict rules, cut off from the outside world. They do not use electricity or modern medicine, do not marry outside the community, and are not allowed to join the army.
The community’s attempts to keep the outside world at bay are disrupted by the annual floods that sweep away everything in their path. When an even more devastating “flood” overtakes Ukraine, the war with Russia leaves the community no choice but to gradually break their rules. They begin to cooperate with the outside world to help in the fight against the common enemy in their own way. Silent Flood won the award for Best Cinematography in the International Competition at IDFA 2025.
The documentary was selected for renowned festivals such as Hot Docs Toronto 2026, CPH:DOX Copenhagen 2026, One World Prague 2026, Gothenburg Film Festival 2025, and Munich International Documentary Film Festival 2026.
