Santa Sangre - European Cinema Night 2025

A former circus artist escapes from a mental hospital to rejoin his armless, cult leader mother, and is forced to enact brutal murders in her name.

Santa Sangre follows the story of the Oedipus complex of a boy whose American father runs a circus in Mexico and whose charming mother is not only a trapeze artist, but also a religious fanatic with murderous and jealous tendencies. Mother loses her arms and father's private parts are mutilated in a fight. The boy grows up and takes over the function of his mother's arms. An abundance of violence and eccentric characters.

Tickets can be booked for free.

Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre: A Feeling, Not an Understanding

Santa Sangre floods the viewer with emotions, images and dreamlike visions that defy rational interpretation. Jodorowsky’s surrealism is not meant to be understood, it invites surrender. The film encourages you to feel, to watch intuitively and to let your unconscious mind take the lead. Symbolism, psychological depth, magical realism and visceral imagery merge into a hypnotic experience that resonates far beyond narrative logic.

Following the screening, Alejandra Ortiz (Las Américas Film Festival) and Feargal Agard (Las Américas Film Festival) will engage in a reflective conversation exploring how Jodorowsky uses the unconscious, identity and emotional perception to liberate cinema from the need for explanation. A dialogue that invites audiences to think, or feel, beyond conventional film interpretation.

Alejandra Ortiz is a Mexican-Dutch writer, activist and film-programme collaborator with a strong focus on queer and migrant communities. She has worked with the Humans of Film Festival and IQMF, co-founded Papaya Kuir and the T-Huis, and is the author of the memoir The Truth Will Set Me Free. Ortiz devotes her energy to visibility, solidarity and social justice for marginalized trans and migrant people.

Feargal Agard is a film festival director, curator and project lead, and the founder of the Humans of Film Festival and LGBTQ Humans of the Netherlands. With an academic background in Liberal Arts (The New School, New York) and Film Studies (University of Amsterdam), Agard’s work through the Humans of Film Foundation focuses on films and stories that highlight diversity, inclusion and underrepresented perspectives. Agard is also involved with the Las Américas Film Festival in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag, strengthening program content and new narratives from a human-interest perspective.
