ROOTS Opening Night 2024
Join us for the exciting opening night of the ROOTS Film Festival, featuring a captivating ceremony, film screenings, and a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Join us for the grand opening of the ROOTS Film Festival on Friday, December 13th, starting with an opening ceremony led by poet Nicchelle Buyne. The evening will feature three selected films from the festival, followed by an engaging Q&A session with the filmmakers.
FILMS SCREENING DURING THE OPENING NIGHT (all including EN subs)
(T)here in time (Otso Prunnila): A short film about a house. English spoken. 7 minutes.
Niemand Thuis (Meyem Çifteci): 18-year-old student Isra goes on one last weekend trip to Texel with her depressed father, hoping to see him happy before she moves out and starts her own life. But when his reaction to the news of her leaving is not what she had hoped, Isra is faced with the fear of letting go. Dutch spoken. 22 minutes.
How Shall we Greet the Sun (Thana Faroq): This film explores the complex memories of women migrants, intertwining two poignant recollections: one from a friend in a refugee camp and another from the filmmaker's mother in Yemen. Through these memories, the film reflects on how past experiences of joy and loss shape identity, belonging, and the emotional exile that arises from the collision of these memories. Arabic spoken. 4 minutes.
In addition, the festival will present two prestigious awards for participating filmmakers: the People's Choice Award, where attendees can cast their votes, and the Jury Award, judged by a professional panel. This year’s jury includes artist Tarona (Pivot), filmmaker Ravi Sandberg (Fantoomwijk), and filmmaker Jasmijn Schrofer (Birth of Light).
Saskia Bruines, Alderman for Finance, Culture, and Economic Development, will be present to officially open this year’s edition of the ROOTS Film Festival.
Kom op vrijdag 13 december naar de feestelijke opening van het ROOTS Film Festival, ingeleid door dichter Nicchelle Buyne. De avond begint met een openingsceremonie, gevolgd door de vertoning van drie geselecteerde films uit het festival, en wordt afgesloten met een interessante Q&A-sessie met de filmmakers.

Niemand Thuis (Meyem Çifteci): De 18-jarige studente Isra gaat met haar depressieve vader op een laatste weekendtrip naar Texel, in de hoop hem gelukkig te zien voordat ze het huis verlaat en haar eigen leven begint. Maar wanneer zijn reactie op het nieuws van haar vertrek niet is zoals ze had gehoopt, wordt Isra geconfronteerd met de angst om los te laten. Nederlands gesproken. 22 minuten.
How Shall We Greet the Sun (Thana Faroq): Deze film onderzoekt de complexe herinneringen van vrouwelijke migranten, waarin twee aangrijpende herinneringen samenkomen: een van een vriendin in een vluchtelingenkamp en een andere van de moeder van de filmmaker in Jemen. Door deze herinneringen reflecteert de film op hoe ervaringen van vreugde en verlies de identiteit, het gevoel van behoren en de emotionele ballingschap vormen die voortkomt uit de botsing van deze herinneringen. Daarnaast zal het festival twee prestigieuze prijzen voor deelnemende filmmakers uitreiken: de Publieksprijs, waarvoor bezoekers hun stem kunnen uitbrengen, en de Juryprijs, beoordeeld door een professionele jury. De jury van dit jaar bestaat uit kunstenaar Tarona (Pivot), filmmaker Ravi Sandberg (Fantoomwijk) en filmmaker Jasmijn Schrofer (Birth of Light).
Saskia Bruines, Wethouder van Financiën, Cultuur en Economische Ontwikkeling, zal aanwezig zijn om deze editie van het ROOTS Film Festival officieel te openen.

This December, ROOTS Film Festival returns for its seventh edition, celebrating The Hague’s filmmaking talent with screenings, discussions, and community connections. Hosted by Filmhuis Den Haag, the festival invites everyone to experience and support the creativity flourishing in their city.
