Throughout the year, three editions of ROOTS in Motion have celebrated the work of local filmmakers, giving them a stage beyond the festival itself. At each edition, audiences voted for their favorite films—and now, the top three are back for a special screening at the ROOTS Film Festival. Join us to rediscover these crowd favorites and see why they captured the hearts of viewers.
This slot consists of the following films:
Memories of What Never Was (Laura Flethe): Following the search for the missing memories of a lost father, who passed away twenty years ago, »memories of what never was« blurs reality and fiction in an exploration of grief, memory and imagination. Can we create new memories with lost ones?
Wayang (Ross Walker): Wayang tells the story of an Indo family, spanning three generations, as they struggle with the effects of loss and uprooting. After fleeing Indonesia, they try to find their place in the Netherlands, caught between two worlds. The wayang puppet play becomes a powerful symbol of connection, memory, and healing.
Noise: Unwanted Sound (Hyejin Jung): After experiencing hearing loss and strange internal sounds, she meets Somchai at the hospital, sharing similar symptoms. Through conversations about noises in their bodies, she explores the boundary between “sound” and “noise,” interpreting her condition within Korean society’s context.

Gedurende het jaar hebben drie edities van ROOTS in Motion het werk van lokale filmmakers gevierd, waarbij zij een podium kregen buiten het festival zelf. Bij elke editie kon het publiek stemmen op hun favoriete films—en nu zijn de drie winnaars terug voor een speciale vertoning tijdens het ROOTS Film Festival. Dit blok bestaat uit de volgende films:
Memories of What Never Was (Laura Flethe): In de zoektocht naar de verloren herinneringen aan haar vader, die twintig jaar geleden overleed, vervagen in Memories of What Never Was realiteit en fictie in een onderzoek naar rouw, geheugen en verbeelding. Kunnen we nieuwe herinneringen creëren met degenen die we verloren hebben?
Wayang (Ross Walker): Wayang vertelt het verhaal van een Indische familie, over drie generaties, die worstelt met de gevolgen van verlies en ontworteling. Na hun vlucht uit Indonesië proberen ze hun plek te vinden in Nederland, gevangen tussen twee werelden. Het wayang-spel wordt een krachtig symbool van verbinding, herinnering en heling.
Noise: Unwanted Sound (Hyejin Jung): Na gehoorverlies en vreemde interne geluiden ontmoet ze Somchai in het ziekenhuis, die soortgelijke symptomen ervaart. Door gesprekken over de geluiden in hun lichamen onderzoekt ze de grens tussen “sound” en “noise” en interpreteert ze haar aandoening in de context van de Koreaanse samenleving.
