In 1991, on the outskirts of Tenja, Josip Reihl-Kir, the chief of the Osijek Police Department, a man dedicated to negotiations and avoiding war, was killed. Peacemaker is a story about the last few months of his life, in the dawn of the bloodthirsty Croatian-Serbian war, which Kir had been trying hard to prevent, told through the statements of a few witnesses and archive materials from the era. Still today, after over 30 years, many elements of that assassination remain unclear and the possible contractors – still unknown. Filmmaker Ivan Ramljak is one of the most significant Croatian documentarians, renowned for his distinctive approach to historical issues.
In 1991 werd Josip Reihl-Kir, hoofd van de politie van Osijek en een man die zich inzette voor onderhandelingen en het voorkomen van oorlog, aan de rand van Tenja vermoord. Peacemaker vertelt het verhaal van de laatste maanden van zijn leven, aan de vooravond van de bloedige Kroatisch-Servische oorlog die Kir zo hard probeerde te voorkomen. Aan de hand van getuigenverklaringen en archiefmateriaal uit die tijd reconstrueert de film de gebeurtenissen. Meer dan dertig jaar later blijven veel aspecten van de moord onopgehelderd en zijn de mogelijke opdrachtgevers nog altijd onbekend. Filmmaker Ivan Ramljak is een van de belangrijkste Kroatische documentairemakers, bekend om zijn kenmerkende benadering van historische vraagstukken.
