Tegen de achtergrond van de opstand van 1936 raken twee Palestijnen verwikkeld in het ontstaan van een onafhankelijkheidsstrijd.
In 1936 versterkt het Britse Rijk zijn greep op Palestina. Yusuf zit gevangen tussen zijn dorp en zijn werk in Jeruzalem, waar Palestijnse journalisten proberen de waarheid vast te leggen terwijl censuur en repressie toenemen. Zijn vriend Khalid radicaliseert en sluit zich aan bij het groeiende verzet, terwijl anderen proberen te overleven tussen angst en hoop. Midden in een antikoloniale opstand en terwijl Joodse vluchtelingen vervolging in Europa ontvluchten, komen alle partijen samen op een beslissend moment voor de hele regio. Wanneer botsende idealen onvermijdelijk leiden tot een gewapend conflict tussen Palestijnse vrijheidsstrijders en wrede Britse officieren, toont Palestine 36 ons het groeiend verzet van gewone mensen in de strijd voor autonomie en hun voortbestaan.
Een epische en diep menselijke film over het begin van de Palestijnse emancipatie - een onderbelicht, maar cruciaal hoofdstuk uit de wereldgeschiedenis. Regisseuse Annemarie Jacir (Wajib) komt hiermee misschien wel met de meest ambitieuze Palestijnse productie ooit: een cinematografische prestatie die tot stand kwam onder extreme omstandigheden, midden in een voortdurende oorlog.
De film ging in première op het filmfestival van Toronto en werd geselecteerd als de Palestijnse inzending voor de Oscars. In 1936, the British Empire tightens its grip on Palestine. Yusuf is caught between his village and his work in Jerusalem, where Palestinian journalists try to capture the truth while censorship and repression escalate. His friend Khalid becomes radicalized and joins the growing resistance, while others try to survive between fear and hope. In the midst of an anti-colonial uprising and while Jewish refugees flee persecution in Europe, all parties come together at a decisive moment for the entire region. When clashing ideals inevitably lead to armed conflict between Palestinian freedom fighters and cruel British officers, Palestine 36 shows us the growing resistance of ordinary people in the struggle for autonomy and their survival.
An epic and deeply human film about the beginning of Palestinian emancipation—an underexposed but crucial chapter in world history. With this, director Annemarie Jacir (Wajib) presents perhaps the most ambitious Palestinian production ever: a cinematic achievement realized under extreme conditions, in the midst of an ongoing war. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was selected as the Palestinian entry for the Oscars.
