In slechts twintig dagen draait Jean-Luc Godard zijn debuutfilm À Bout de Souffle – een film die de geschiedenis van de cinema voorgoed zal veranderen en de Franse Nouvelle Vague ontketent. Tot dan toe is Godard filmcriticus bij Cahiers du Cinéma, maar hij besluit dat de beste kritiek is om zelf films te maken. Met een bescheiden budget en een scenario van François Truffaut over een gangsterkoppel, gooit hij alle regels van het filmmaken overboord. Ondanks de scepsis van zijn cast en crew wordt het een daverend succes: ruim 2,5 miljoen bezoekers in Frankrijk, prijzen voor Godard en een BAFTA-nominatie voor hoofdrolspeelster Jean Seberg.
