Intieme film over choreografe en danseres Cheroney Pelupessy die voor het eerst samen met haar moeder de reis naar Indonesië maakt op zoek naar een verzwegen familiegeschiedenis. Filmmaker Sven Peetoom legt al jaren de gevolgen bloot van de Nederlandse koloniale geschiedenis in Indonesië. In deze film volgt hij choreografe en danseres Cheroney Pelupessy, terwijl zij samen met haar moeder naar Jakarta reist. Het is de plek waar Cheroney's moeder opgroeide, maar altijd angstvallig stil over bleef. Tijdens de reis proberen ze samen haar traumatische verleden onder ogen te zien en zodoende dichter bij elkaar te komen. Wat begint als een zoektocht naar een vergeten familiegeschiedenis, ontvouwt zich tot een indringend portret over spanningen, trauma's en de hoop op verbinding.
Sven Peetoom maakte vorig jaar grote indruk met Tussen Wal en Schip, over de generationele werking van de Nederlands-Indische geschiedenis. We zijn heel blij dat Sven op 2 juni in het Filmhuis aanwezig is om over zijn nieuwe film te praten. Moderator is onze collega Dyonne van Haastert, die zich ook inzet voor Jong 1508.

An intimate film about choreographer and dancer Cheroney Pelupessy, who makes the journey to Indonesia for the first time with her mother in search of a hidden family history. Filmmaker Sven Peetoom has been exposing the consequences of Dutch colonial history in Indonesia for years. In this film, he follows choreographer and dancer Cheroney Pelupessy as she travels to Jakarta with her mother. It is the place where Cheroney's mother grew up, yet always remained anxiously silent about it. During the journey, they attempt to confront her traumatic past together and, in doing so, grow closer. What begins as a search for a forgotten family history unfolds into a poignant portrait of tensions, traumas, and the hope for connection.
Sven Peetoom made a big impression with Tussen Wal en Schip, a film exploring the generational impact of Dutch East Indies history. We are delighted that Sven will be present at Filmhuis Den Haag on June 2nd to talk about his new film. The discussion will be moderated by our colleague Dyonne van Haastert, who is also involved with Jong 1508.
