Mama'ku – Van Jakarta tot de Molukken
Mama’ku: van Jakarta tot de Molukken is een combinatie van de films Mama’ku en Sudah.
In Mama'ku reist danseres Cheroney Pelupessy voor het eerst samen met haar moeder terug naar Indonesië, op zoek naar een verzwegen familiegeschiedenis. De film ontvouwt zich tot een intieme roadmovie over migratie, huiselijk geweld en moederschap, met een lach en een traan.
Regisseur en producent Sven Peetoom maakte vorig jaar grote indruk Tussen Wal en Schip, over de generationele werking van de Nederlands-Indische geschiedenis. We zijn heel blij dat Sven op 2 juni in het Filmhuis aanwezig is om over zijn nieuwe film te praten. Moderator is onze collega Dyonne van Haastert, die zich ook inzet voor Jong 1508.
Vooraf vertonen we de korte fictiefilm Sudah, over een moeder en dochter met Indonesische roots, een familiezwijgen dat doorbroken moet worden en de vraag of ze samen de reis naar Indonesië durven te maken. Waar Mama'ku die reis daadwerkelijk maakt, speelt Sudah zich af in de avond ervóór: warm, grappig en ontroerend, met Denise Aznam in de hoofdrol.
In Mama'ku, dancer Cheroney Pelupessy travels back to Indonesia with her mother for the first time, in search of a family history that has been kept hidden. The film unfolds as an intimate road movie about migration, domestic violence and motherhood, with moments of both laughter and tears.
Last year, director and producer Sven Peetoom made a big impression with Tussen Wal en Schip, a film exploring the generational impact of Dutch East Indies history. We are delighted that Sven will be present at Filmhuis Den Haag on June 2nd to talk about his new film. The discussion will be moderated by our colleague Dyonne van Haastert, who is also involved with Jong 1508.
Before the main feature, we will be screening the short fiction film Sudah, about a mother and daughter with Indonesian roots, a family silence that needs to be broken, and the question of whether they dare to make the journey to Indonesia together. Whilst Mama’ku actually makes that journey, Sudah is set the evening before: warm, funny and moving, starring Denise Aznam.
