De zeventienjarige Ainara (overtuigend neergezet door Blanca Soroa in haar eerste speelfilm) is een intelligente en idealistische vrouw die op jonge leeftijd haar moeder verloor. Net als haar religieuze moeder en andere familieleden gaat ze naar een christelijke school. Iedereen in haar omgeving verwacht dat ze gaat studeren, maar zelf lijkt ze meer te voelen voor een contemplatief leven als non. Wanneer Ainara haar familie vertelt dat ze overweegt om in te treden in een klooster, lokt dit uiteenlopende reacties uit. Haar vader twijfelt, maar wil vooral zijn dochter steunen. Haar atheïstische tante Maite vindt dat haar nichtje op het punt staat haar leven te vergooien. Wil ze dit echt, of is ze beïnvloed door de geestelijke leiding van haar school?
Los Domingos van de Spaanse regisseur Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, CincoLobitos) is voer voor discussie, en verkent de positieve kanten én de keerzijdes van Ainara’s religieuze roeping. Tegelijkertijd roept het vragen op over tolerantie, indoctrinatie, conformisme en persoonlijke vrijheid. Met subtiele observaties en scherpe dialogen ontstaat een indringend portret van een jong meisje dat haar eigen pad probeert te vinden.
De film was in Spanje een enorm succes, en won maar liefst vijf Goya Awards,waaronder voor Beste Film en voor Beste Regisseur. Los Domingos ging in wereldpremière op het Filmfestival van San Sebastián. Daar sleepte hij vijf prijzen in de wacht, waaronder de Gouden Schelp voor Beste Film. In Nederland ging de film in première op het Internationaal Film Festival Rotterdam.
Seventeen-year-old Ainara (convincingly portrayed by Blanca Soroa in her feature film debut) is an intelligent and idealistic woman who lost her mother at a young age. Like her religious mother and other family members, she attends a Christian school. Everyone around her expects her to go to college, but she herself seems to prefer a contemplative life as a nun. When Ainara tells her family that she is considering entering a convent, it elicits mixed reactions. Her father has doubts but primarily wants to support his daughter. Her atheist aunt Maite believes her niece is about to throw away her life. Does she truly want this, or is she influenced by the spiritual leadership of her school?
Los Domingos by Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, CincoLobitos) is food for discussion and explores both the positive and the downsides of Ainara’s religious calling. At the same time, it raises questions about tolerance, indoctrination, conformism, and personal freedom. Through subtle observations and sharp dialogue, a poignant portrait emerges of a young girl trying to find her own path.
The film was a huge success in Spain, winning no fewer than five Goya Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Los Domingos had its world premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival, where it took home five awards, including the Golden Shell for Best Picture. In the Netherlands, the film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
