A sonic and sensory journey through Krakatoa, blending speculative fiction and documentary to explore catastrophe, time, and human survival.
Krakatoa is a hybrid film – partially speculative fiction and partially documentary – that follows a sonic narrative and interweaves abstract scientific imaging. It begins from a sonic reconstruction of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, and mixes it with an account from a survivor of its last eruption in 2018. The film explores the sensorial possibilities of film as medium and seeks to bring the audience closer to our surrounding ecologies through abstract audiovisual embodiment. The film follows the last day of Kesuma, a young Bagan fisherman who lives on a bamboo fishing platform near Krakatoa. Seeking food and water following an eruption, he descends into a hallucinatory journey through geological eras, lava rivers, and abstraction itself.
Krakatoa is een hybride film – deels speculatieve fictie en deels documentaire – die een sonisch narratief volgt en abstracte wetenschappelijke beeldvorming verweeft. De film vertrekt vanuit een geluidsreconstructie van de uitbarsting van Krakatoa in 1883, en combineert dit met een verslag van een overlevende van de laatste uitbarsting in 2018. De film verkent de zintuiglijke mogelijkheden van film als medium en probeert het publiek dichter bij onze omringende ecosystemen te brengen via een abstracte audiovisuele belichaming. De film volgt de laatste dag van Kesuma, een jonge visser uit Bagan die leeft op een bamboevisplatform nabij Krakatoa. Op zoek naar voedsel en water na een uitbarsting, belandt hij in een hallucinerende reis door geologische tijdperken, lavastromen en abstractie zelf.

Rewire is an annual international festival for adventurous music.
