Tom is een charismatische goedzak die werkt als tenniscoach op een prachtig all-inclusive resort op Fuerteventura. De gasten genieten van hun luxe verblijf, maar Tom is verveeld door zijn dagelijkse, oppervlakkige routine van lesgeven, uitgaan en onenightstands. Chronisch katerig houdt hij mensen op afstand, totdat de Maguire-familie incheckt in het resort. Anne & Dave staan erop dat Tom hun zoontje privéles geeft, nemen hem mee uiteten en langzaamaan raakt Tom steeds meer betrokken bij het gezin en hun problemen. Na een stapavond met Dave hoort Tom de volgende ochtend dat Dave is verdwenen.

Oh Boy (2012) met Tom Schilling was zijn succesvolle debuutfilm en ook Gerster’s tweede film Lara (2019) heeft meerdere prijzen ontvangen. In het onheilspellende Islands is niets wat het lijkt en toont Gerster dat je niet kunt vluchten voor je problemen, zelfs niet op vakantie. Met hoofdrollen voor Sam Riley (Control, Firebrand), Stacy Martin (The Brutalist) en Jack Farthing (Spencer, The Lost Daughter). Islands had zijn wereldpremière dit jaar tijdens de Berlinale en won bij de German Film Awards de prijs voor Best Film Score.
Tom is a charismatic good guy working as a tennis coach at a beautiful all-inclusive resort in Fuerteventura. Guests enjoy their luxurious stay, but Tom is bored by his daily, superficial routine of giving lessons, partying, and one-night stands. Chronically hungover, he keeps people at a distance—until the Maguire family checks into the resort. Anne and Dave insist that Tom gives their young son private lessons, take them out to dinner, and gradually, Tom becomes increasingly involved with the family and their problems. After a night out with Dave, Tom wakes up the next morning to find that Dave has disappeared.
Islands is an intense, sultry psychological thriller and the English-language debut of German director Jan-Ole Gerster. Oh Boy (2012) with Tom Schilling was his successful debut, and Gerster’s second film, Lara (2019), has also received multiple awards. In the menacing Islands, nothing is as it seems, and Gerster shows that you cannot escape your problems—even on vacation. Starring Sam Riley (Control, Firebrand), Stacy Martin (The Brutalist), and Jack Farthing (Spencer, The Lost Daughter). Islands had its world premiere this year at the Berlinale and won the German Film Award for Best Film Score.
