Is muziek een antwoord op oorlogsgeweld? Voor Kinan is het musiceren in elk geval ‘an act of freedom’.
Hoe meer Syrische klarinettist Kinan Azmeh door de oorlog afgesneden is geraakt van zijn thuisland, des te groter is zijn urgentie de traditionele muziek uit de regio waar hij vandaan komt een plaats te geven in zijn muziek. In ‘Intens Bewogen’ gaat Kinan niet alleen op zoek naar zijn muzikale oorsprong, maar ook naar zijn eigen geschiedenis en de verwevenheid daarvan met de complexe en gewelddadige verhoudingen in het gebied, dat oorspronkelijk de bakermat van onze beschaving is. In het iconische Hamburgse theater Elbphilharmonie bereidt klarinettist Kinan Azmeh zich voor op Salām Syria, een festival gewijd aan Syrische muziek. In zijn compositie Home Within, begeleid door live animaties van zijn Armeense vriend Kevork Mourad, verkent hij wat ’thuis’ voor hem betekent: New York, waar hij woont; Damascus, waar hij opgroeide en zijn familie leeft; of de wereldwijde podia waar hij optreedt. De oorlog in Syrië doet Kinan beseffen hoe diep de muzikale tradities van zijn geboorteland verweven zijn met zijn identiteit. Hij laat zich inspireren door artiesten als Koerdische zangeres Aynur Doğan en muzikant Ibrahim Keivo, die de rijke en diverse muzikale geschiedenis van Syrië levend houden. Door muziek brengt Kinan een dialoog tussen Oost en West tot stand, terwijl hij de hoop koestert ooit terug te keren naar Damascus. Deze documentaire is een intieme reis naar zijn muzikale en persoonlijke roots.
The more Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh has been cut off from his homeland by war, the greater his urgency to give a place to the traditional music of the region he comes from in his work. In Intensely Moved, Kinan not only seeks out his musical origins, but also his own history and its intertwining with the complex and violent relationships in the region, which was originally the cradle of our civilization. At the iconic Hamburg theater Elbphilharmonie, clarinetist Kinan Azmeh prepares for Salām Syria, a festival dedicated to Syrian music. Through music, Kinan establishes a dialogue between East and West, while nurturing the hope of one day returning to Damascus. This documentary is an intimate journey into his musical and personal roots.
