When a new imam arrives, the atmosphere slowly begins to change. What was once a close-knit community becomes divided. What once felt natural comes under pressure. The women of the village, including Fadma, work the land with song and joy, but everything shifts when a deeply conservative imam takes hold. Step by step, he sows division by banning what he considers haram, pushing some villagers to deny their Amazigh identity, and driving others toward resistance.
Goundafa is a film about what happens when culture and faith collide. It explores identity, outside pressure, and how long a community can remain true to itself. Debut director Ali Benjelloun grew up around film sets and began his career as a cinematographer. The film is both a warm and sharp parable about tradition, identity, and religious extremism, and also a tribute to the rich Amazigh culture that has lived in the High Atlas for centuries.

In een dorpje in het Hoge Atlasgebergte maken Said, Brahim en Omar muziek en dromen ze van een ander leven. Muziek is hun vrijheid, hun identiteit.
Wanneer er een nieuwe imam arriveert, begint de sfeer langzaam te veranderen. Wat eens een hechte gemeenschap was, raakt verdeeld. Wat vroeger vanzelfsprekend voelde, komt onder druk te staan. De vrouwen van het dorp, waaronder Fadma, bewerken het land met zang en vreugde, maar alles verandert wanneer een zeer conservatieve imam de touwtjes in handen neemt. Stap voor stap zaait hij verdeeldheid door te verbieden wat hij als haram beschouwt, waardoor sommige dorpsbewoners gedwongen worden hun Amazigh-identiteit te verloochenen en anderen tot verzet worden aangezet.
Goundafa is een film over wat er gebeurt als cultuur en geloof met elkaar in botsing komen. De film gaat over identiteit, druk van buitenaf en de vraag hoe lang een gemeenschap trouw kan blijven aan zichzelf. Debuutregisseur Ali Benjelloun groeide op tussen de filmsets en begon zijn carrière als cameraman. De film is zowel een hartverwarmende als scherpzinnige parabel over traditie, identiteit en religieus extremisme, als een eerbetoon aan de rijke Amazigh-cultuur die al eeuwenlang in het Hoge Atlasgebergte leeft.
