Takashi Yamazaki
Godzilla Minus One Plus Sonny
As Japan struggles to rebuild after World War II, a new catastrophe rises from the sea.
The best monsters express our deepest fears, and Godzilla is no different. Debuting in 1954, Gojira is a nuclear titan born from the horrors of the World War 2, representing destruction on a scale that mankind should never have become familiar with.
Over the years, Godzilla changed: popularity sanded off the rough edges and slowly turning him into a protector who fights other monsters.
The monster became a hero, or more precisely: he became OUR monster, protecting us from more malevolent entities.
It's easy to forget that below the campy blockbusters, there still remains something raw and dangerous - something that director Takashi Yamazaki taps into with 2023's Minus One. Here is a monster we cannot escape, until we recognize it for what it is and emerge stronger on the other side.
