The third edition in a series of three programs titled Unearthing the Archives! We will embark on a journey set out to inspire and mobilize.
Activation! is the third and last edition in a series of three programs titled Unearthing the Archives!. A deep-dive into the world of archival films. The first edition Excavation features films where the archive takes central stage and the filmmaker intervenes through editing. The second edition Meditation features intimate stories and personal insights, where archival footage becomes a tool utilized by the filmmaker to share introspection, or deliver powerful realizations. This time around mobilizing is the goal, covering intens and powerful subject matter, the archive is used to inspire, and to activate. These films are made to spread a message of awareness.
Present at the screening will be Collectif Fair-part (BE/CD) for a conversation after the screening with brothers Gaetan Mbwete and Glodi Mbwete from Wij Zijn Congolezen.

Speech for a Melting Statue
Collectif Faire-part | Belgium | 2023 | 10 minutes
In June 2020, thousands of people took to the streets in Brussels to protest police brutality and institutional racism in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. For a moment, it seemed some demonstrators might take down the statue of colonial king Leopold II in a nearby square. While the sculpture still stands, an optimistic poet prepares her speech for the day it will be removed.

A group of activists is fighting to preserve a historical landmark in the center of Kyiv from a developer. Their struggle is an exact parallel to the fight for memory that took place a century ago, when the soviet government attempted to erase Ukrainian identity.
Activation! is de derde en laatste editie in een reeks van drie programma’s met de titel Unearthing the Archives!. Een diepe duik in de wereld van archieffilms.
De eerste editie, Excavation, bevat films waarin het archief centraal staat en de filmmaker ingrijpt door middel van montage. De tweede editie, Meditation, bevat intieme verhalen en persoonlijke inzichten, waarin archiefmateriaal een instrument wordt dat de filmmaker gebruikt om introspectie te delen of krachtige inzichten over te brengen.
Deze keer is mobiliseren het doel. Aan de hand van intens en krachtig materiaal wordt het archief ingezet om te inspireren en te activeren. Deze films zijn gemaakt om een boodschap van bewustwording te verspreiden.
Tijdens de vertoning zal Collectif Fair-part (BE/CD) aanwezig zijn voor een gesprek na afloop met de broers Gaetan Mbwete en Glodi Mbwete van Wij Zijn Congolezen.

Collectif Faire-part | België | 2023 | 10 minuten
In juni 2020 gingen duizenden mensen in Brussel de straat op om te protesteren tegen politiegeweld en institutioneel racisme, uit solidariteit met Black Lives Matter. Even leek het erop dat sommige demonstranten het standbeeld van de koloniale koning Leopold II op een nabijgelegen plein zouden neerhalen.
Hoewel het beeld nog altijd overeind staat, bereidt een optimistische dichteres haar toespraak voor op de dag waarop het zal worden verwijderd.

Een groep activisten strijdt ervoor om een historisch monument in het centrum van Kyiv te beschermen tegen een projectontwikkelaar. Hun strijd vormt een directe parallel met de strijd om herinnering die een eeuw geleden plaatsvond, toen de Sovjetregering probeerde de Oekraïense identiteit uit te wissen.
