Set in a distant future where humans can achieve immortality by obtaining mechanical bodies, the film follows Tetsuro Hoshino, a young boy determined to become immortal after his mother is killed by a mechanized villain. He boards the mysterious interstellar train Galaxy Express 999, traveling through strange planets and encountering both danger and wonder. Along the way, Tetsuro is guided by the enigmatic and compassionate Maetel, who teaches him about life, humanity, and the cost of pursuing immortality. Their journey becomes a poignant exploration of friendship, loss, and what it truly means to be human in a universe dominated by machines
De film speelt zich af in een verre toekomst waarin mensen onsterfelijk kunnen worden door een mechanisch lichaam te krijgen. We volgen Tetsuro Hoshino, een jonge jongen die vastbesloten is om onsterfelijk te worden nadat zijn moeder is vermoord door een gemechaniseerde schurk. Hij stapt aan boord van de mysterieuze interstellaire trein Galaxy Express 999, reist langs vreemde planeten en komt zowel gevaar als verwondering tegen. Onderweg wordt Tetsuro begeleid door de raadselachtige en medelevende Maetel, die hem leert over het leven, de menselijkheid en de prijs die moet worden betaald voor het nastreven van onsterfelijkheid.
