Join us for the first in a series of special screenings celebrating creative collaborations!
On September 10, we welcome Erik Viskil—researcher, educator, academic director, and co-founder of the Leiden Essay Film Festival (the first Dutch festival dedicated entirely to the essay film).
Together, we’ll watch Uncle Yanco by Agnès Varda and Double Take by Johan Grimonprez—two striking essay films selected by Erik and Georgie Brinkman, who are working together through LEFF and the FILM lectorate of KABK and the Royal Conservatoire.
Why these two films? Because they come from two of the most daring and inventive voices in essay filmmaking—artists whose work feels especially relevant today.
Agnès Varda, with her playful eye and sincere approach, transformed the personal into the political. Johan Grimonprez masterfully reassembles archival material into poetic collage films that question and illuminate political realities.
Though Uncle Yanco and Double Take differ in tone and meaning, they share the essence of the essay film: subjective and reflective, hybrid in form, revealing both the creative process and the act of thinking. And above all—they’re simply wonderful to experience.
Stay after the screening for a Q&A with Erik Viskil to exchange ideas and learn more about LEFF. We can’t wait to see you there!
