The King of Comedy is a satirical dark comedy that was once seen as a relatively minor entry in Scorsese’s body of work, but has since earned growing critical acclaim. It stars longtime collaborator Robert de Niro and even former late-night talk show host Jerry Lewis playing a character eerily similar to himself.
The plot revolves around a half-crazed loner (De Niro) with a unique fashion sense and a strangely unfaltering self-belief in his comedic talent. He so desperately wants a leg-up in showbusiness that he begins stalking and harassing one of his idols, a talk show host.
Even after 40 years, the film's themes of obsession, alienation, and the pursuit of fame and celebrity are just as poignant–we live in a world where many young people regularly engage in shocking or unethical behaviour for attention.
Come join us for a night of belly laughs and fun, and don’t forget to buy a drink before the show. The more you drink, the funnier the comedians will become. And if you really want to get into the showbusiness vibe with us, come in your best suit!
