film070 presents: Damnation in 4K

A bleak loner seizes a dangerous smuggling deal in a desperate bid to win the love of a woman who will never be his.

Whilst we’re all still hanging on to the last warmer sunny days of the Summer, it is safe to say that we will soon fall into the colder, wetter, bleaker seasons of the year. To welcome the grey days, we decided it was time for a nice, slow, dreary film to embrace the changeover together. For our next screening on 8 October, we wrote down in our internal planning: Dreary Soviet Winter Vibes, and that’s precisely what we went for with Béla Tarr’s 1988 film Damnation.

In this film, characteristically bleak as only Tarr can do it, we follow Karrer, a depressed man who is deeply and tragically enamoured with alcohol and an unnamed married singer at the local Titanik Bar. When she breaks off their affair, Karrer comes up with a plan to (at least temporarily) get rid of her husband by involving him in a smuggling job. But then, naturally, the plan falls apart. Betrayal, despair, and drab, drab contemplation follow.

Béla Tarr’s films are notoriously riddled with philosophical, contemplative reflection on the state of the world. They are slow and languid, extending into a black & white time and space, with Tarr being no stranger to shots that can reach up to 5, 10, or even 57(!) minutes long. With a run time of just under two hours, Damnation is often considered one of his more accessible films, as well as his first masterpiece. So come join us on 15 October at 18.30 to watch this brilliant piece of cinema together, and join us at the Filmhuis Bar downstairs afterwards. Who knows, maybe there’s an unnamed married singer to fall in love with there, too.
