El jockey
De nieuwe tragikomische film van Luis Ortega (El ángel) volgt voormalig topjockey Remo Manfredini (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) die, op de vlucht voor meedogenloze maffiabaas Úrsula Corberó, in een poëtisch en absurd Buenos Aires balanceert tussen roem, ondergang en zelfontdekking.
Ooit was Remo Manfredini een legendarische jockey, maar zijn zelfdestructieve gedrag bracht hem op het verkeerde pad. Nu racet hij vooral om zijn torenhoge schulden af te lossen bij een criminele bende, geleid door de louche maffiabaas Sirena. Tijdens de belangrijkste race van zijn leven gaat het mis: Remo veroorzaakt een tragisch ongeluk waarbij een van de meest waardevolle paarden omkomt. Zelf raakt hij zwaargewond. Als hij in het ziekenhuis bijkomt, slaat hij op de vlucht. Met het verband nog om zijn hoofd neemt hij een nieuwe identiteit aan en zwerft door de straten van Buenos Aires, op de vlucht voor Sirena.
Door de absurde humor en de scherpe contrasten doet El Jockey denken aan het werk van Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos en Aki Kaurismäki. Het is de nieuwe film van Luis Ortega, de toonaangevende Argentijnse regisseur die bekend staat om zijn poëtisch geladen en visueel intense stijl. Ortega brak internationaal door met El ángel (2018), welke werd geselecteerd voor het Filmfestival van Cannes en, net als El Jockey, werd ingezonden voor de Oscars. Met El Jockey presenteert Ortega een tragikomische studie over roem, vervreemding en identiteit. Met Nahuel Pérez Biscayart als ex-sportheld op zoek naar zichzelf en Úrsula Corberó (Tokio in La casa de papel) als zijn geliefde en concurrent. De film ging in première in competitie tijdens het Filmfestival van Venetië en won onder meer de Horizontes Latinos Award in San Sebastián.
Once, Remo Manfredini was a legendary jockey, but his self-destructive behavior led him astray. Now, he mostly races to pay off his towering debts to a criminal gang led by the shady mob boss Sirena. During the most important race of his life, things go wrong: Remo causes a tragic accident in which one of the most valuable horses is killed. He himself is seriously injured. When he wakes up in the hospital, he flees. With bandages still wrapped around his head, he assumes a new identity and roams the streets of Buenos Aires, on the run from Sirena.
With its absurd humor and sharp contrasts, El Jockey recalls the work of Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Aki Kaurismäki. It is the new film by Luis Ortega, the leading Argentine director known for his poetically charged and visually intense style.
