Eagles of the Republic is de nieuwe film van Tarik Saleh (Cairo Conspiracy) waarin een gevierde acteur verstrikt raakt in de machtsspelletjes van de elite. In deze politieke thriller richt Saleh zijn blik op de filmindustrie als één van de machtscentra van het hedendaagse Egypte, waarin propaganda en ijdelheid in elkaar overvloeien.
George Fahmu (Fares Fares), de populairste filmster van Egypte, wordt onder druk gezet om president Al-Sisi te vertolken in een propaganda biopic. Hij neemt de rol met tegenzin aan en de ongemakkelijke opdracht voert hem al snel naar de hoogste regionen van de macht. Terwijl hij verstrikt raakt in een web van corruptie, paranoia en verleidingen, wordt hij geconfronteerd met de fundamentele vraag: hoeveel van jezelf wil je opgeven om te overleven.
Eagles of the Republic werd geselecteerd voor de hoofdcompetitie van het Filmfestival van Cannes en was de Zweedse Oscarinzending. In Saleh’s thuisland won de film 6 Guldbagge Awards, de belangrijkste Zweedse filmprijs, waaronder die voor Beste Acteur, Beste Scenario en Best Film.

Eagles of the Republic was selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival and was Sweden's Oscar entry. In Saleh’s home country, the film won 6 Guldbagge Awards, the most important Swedish film award, including those for Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Film.
