Donna: Women in Revolt - Kunstmuseum Den Haag
Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling Life, Love and Death in Sicily vertonen we Donna: Women in Revolt, met een inleidend gesprek over het werk en de nalatenschap van Letizia Battaglia en de kracht van vrouwelijk verzet.
Te midden van het door de maffia getekende Sicilië legde fotograaf, activist en politica Letizia Battaglia (Sicilië, 1935–2022) vanaf het begin van de jaren zeventig de rauwe realiteit van het dagelijks leven in en rondom Palermo vast. In haar strijd tegen de georganiseerde misdaad gebruikte Battaglia haar camera als wapen: als fotojournalist documenteerde zij de dagelijkse terreur en bracht deze onder de aandacht via de voorpagina’s van kranten. Life, Love and Death in Sicily is de eerste grote overzichtstentoonstelling van Battaglia sinds haar overlijden in 2022, geproduceerd door The Photographers’ Gallery in Londen en nu te zien in Fotomuseum Den Haag.
Aansluitend op de tentoonstelling presenteren wij op 1 augustus de film Donna: Women in Revolt, in samenwerking met Kunstmuseum Den Haag en ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA – AMSTERDAM. Met een inleidend gesprek met curator Paolo Falcone en voormalig correspondent en maakster van de documentaire Yvonne Scholten verbinden we de documentaire met Battaglia’s werk en haar onverschrokken blik op macht, verzet en de Siciliaanse samenleving. Rauw, strijdbaar, bevrijdend.
Yvonne Scholten (maker van de documentaire): Studeerde politieke wetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Werkte van 1969 tot 1981 als correspondent in Italië. Introduceerde in 1972 het werk van Antonio Gramsci in Nederland. Nam afscheid van Italie met de documentaire “Donna”, Vrouwen in Verzet. Werkte van 1981 tot 2004 voor de Publieke Omroep. Specialiseerde in de Spaanse Burgeroorlog.
Paolo Falcone (Curator van de tentoonstelling): Paolo Falcone is onafhankelijk curator, auteur, redacteur en kunstcriticus. Sinds 2019 is hij oprichter en voorzitter van de Fondazione Falcone per le Arti e le Culture del XXI secolo in Palermo en Rome, een stichting die zich richt op kunstprojecten rondom de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen van de Verenigde Naties.
Paolo Falcone is de curator van Letizia Battaglia: Life, Love and Death in Sicily (eerder te zien bij The Photographers' Gallery in Londen), die momenteel te zien is in Fotomuseum Den Haag (van 4 april tot en met 23 augustus).
Flavio Aulino (Moderator): Flavio Aulino is een kenner van de Italiaanse cinema en programmeert al meer dan tien jaar een zeer populair Italiaans filmfestival in Amsterdam. Het festival, dat hij nog altijd organiseert, trekt een breed publiek van Italiaanse expats, Nederlandse filmliefhebbers en internationale bezoekers. Eerder werkte hij als scenarioschrijver, producent en filmcriticus. Daarnaast is Flavio gespecialiseerd in de Italiaanse taal en cultuur, met een bijzondere expertise op het gebied van de Italiaanse geschiedenis van de jaren zeventig, tachtig en negentig.
De restauratie van Donna: Vrouwen in verzet is een samenwerking tussen Eye Filmmuseum en het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld & Geluid, en is mogelijk gemaakt dankzij A Season of Classic Films, een initiatief van Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE), ondersteund door het EU Creative Europe MEDIA-programma.
In the midst of Sicily, scarred by the mafia, photographer, activist and politician Letizia Battaglia (Sicily, 1935–2022) captured the raw reality of daily life in and around Palermo from the early 1970s. In her fight against organized crime, Battaglia used her camera as a weapon: as a photojournalist she documented daily terror and brought it to attention on the front pages of newspapers. Life, Love and Death in Sicily is the first major retrospective of Battaglia since her death in 2022, produced by The Photographers' Gallery in London and now on view at Fotomuseum Den Haag.
Following the exhibition, we will present the film Donna: Women in Revolt on August 1, in collaboration with Kunstmuseum Den Haag and ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA – AMSTERDAM. With an introductory conversation with curator Paolo Falcone and former correspondent and maker of the documentary Yvonne Scholten, we connect the documentary with Battaglia's work and her fearless view of power, resistance and Sicilian society. Raw, combative, liberating.
Yvonne Scholten (maker of the documentary): Studied political science at the University of Amsterdam. Worked as a correspondent in Italy from 1969 to 1981. Introduced the work of Antonio Gramsci in the Netherlands in 1972. Said goodbye to Italy with the documentary “Donna”, Women in Resistance. Worked for the Public Broadcaster from 1981 to 2004. Specialized in the Spanish Civil War.
Paolo Falcone (Curator of the exhibition): Paolo Falcone is an independent curator, author, editor and art critic. Since 2019, he has been founder and president of the Fondazione Falcone per le Arti e le Culture del XXI secolo in Palermo and Rome, focused on art projects centered on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Paolo Falcone is the curator of Letizia Battaglia: Life, Love and Death in Sicily (previously shown at The Photographers' Gallery, London), currently on view at Fotomuseum Den Haag (4 April through 23 August).
Flavio Aulino (Moderator) : Flavio Aulino is an expert in Italian cinema and has been curating a highly popular Italian film festival in Amsterdam for over ten years, an event he still runs today, drawing a wide audience of Italian expats, Dutch cinephiles, and international film lovers alike. Earlier in his career, he worked as a screenwriter, producer, and film critic. Flavio is also a specialist in Italian language and culture, with particular expertise in Italian history of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
The restoration of Donna: Women in Revolt is a collaboration between Eye Filmmuseum and the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision. The restoration has been made possible thanks to A Season of Classic Films, an initiative of Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) supported by the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme.
