Can you hear the objects speak? Screening - Short films
As part of Can you hear the objects speak?, this interdisciplinary film program by wysiwyg and Asian Movie Night explores the living worlds of displaced heritage, foregrounding the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values of objects taken from Indonesia and the animist, relational cosmopraxis they reveal.
This program is part of interdisciplinary film program Can you hear the objects speak? by film platform wysiwyg and diasporic film platform Asian Movie Night. Spanning multiple events across various cities, the program seeks to reclaim the living worlds of displaced heritage. Rather than focusing solely on material significance—a logic that often mirrored colonial frameworks of preservation—the program foregrounds the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values these objects hold for the communities from which they were taken, as a gateway to understand the animist and relational cosmopraxis shared by many Indigenous nations in the present day Indonesia.
Tonight’s program consist of five short films.
Dear Shadow, My Old Friend (Sihir Kamar Gelap)

A phone call from within a dream recalls encounters with shadows in a photographic darkroom. Celluloid fragments open onto inherited memories, blurring personal and collective memory. The film becomes a meditation on displacement, history, home, and the echoes that persist across generations.
The Stone That Remembers
Diyantini Adeline (developed in collaboration with Vladimir Vidanovski) | 2026 | Indonesia | 14’
The Stone That Remembers interprets the Durga Mahisasuramardini - statue’s journey from its home, the Singhasari Temple, to the hands of colonizers, and various museums. The film follows the patriarchal displacement of a woman that represents the Durga, exploring the parallels between the fate of the statue and many women today.
Sharp Objects
Taufiqurrahman Kifu and Hattie Wade | 2026 | Indonesia, the Netherlands | 16’
Sharp Objects follows the forgotten story of the Klungkung keris back to it’s origins and to its post-colonial relevance to Bali today, tracing the looting of the keris to modern day tourism in Bali. The film juxtaposes the ‘knowledge’ of colonial archives against community-based knowledge and mythology, convoluting the understanding of what is preserved, what is dead and what is lost.

Arahmaiani: Between the Mountain and the Sea is a 3-act performance art documentary produced by Creative Cowboy Films featuring prominent Indonesian multidisciplinary artist Arahmaiani Feisal.

Riar Rizaldi | 2018 | 18’
One-third of the global tin supply is extracted from Bangka island in Indonesia. Tin is the most impacted mineral by the upcoming technological development, which includes artificial intelligence and technology for renewable energy. Natasha is a solar-powered A.I. voice, and in this film, they trace their genealogy and the truth of their origin; from the capital liquidity to labour dynamic. With their feminised voice—as quite often performed by other AI-powered voice assistants produced by tech-companies, Natasha narrates the emergence of tin in Bangka island and their existence from the perspective of tropical anthropology of nature, value theory, philosophy of time, genetic mutation, geopolitics, and automation.
Dit programma maakt deel uit van het interdisciplinaire filmprogramma Can you hear the objects speak? van filmplatform WYSIWYG en diasporisch filmplatform Asian Movie Night. Met een reeks evenementen in verschillende steden onderzoekt het programma hoe de levende werelden van ontheemd erfgoed kunnen worden teruggewonnen.
In plaats van uitsluitend te kijken naar de materiële waarde van erfgoed — een benadering die vaak geworteld is in koloniale ideeën over bewaren en conserveren — staat dit programma stil bij de emotionele, culturele, spirituele en gemeenschappelijke betekenis die deze objecten hebben voor de gemeenschappen waaruit ze zijn geroofd of meegenomen. Vanuit die invalshoek ontstaat ruimte om de animistische en relationele kosmopraxis te begrijpen die vandaag de dag door veel inheemse gemeenschappen in Indonesië wordt gedeeld.

Een telefoongesprek vanuit een droom brengt herinneringen terug aan ontmoetingen met schaduwen in een fotografische donkere kamer. Fragmenten van celluloid openen een wereld van overgeleverde herinneringen, waarin persoonlijke en collectieve geschiedenissen in elkaar overvloeien. De film is een meditatieve reflectie op ontheemding, geschiedenis, thuis en de echo’s die van generatie op generatie blijven voortleven.

The Stone That Remembers volgt de reis van het beeld van Durga Mahisasuramardini: van zijn oorspronkelijke plek in de Singhasari-tempel, via de handen van koloniale machthebbers, naar verschillende musea. De film onderzoekt de patriarchale ontheemding van een vrouwelijk beeld dat Durga verbeeldt en legt verbanden met het lot van veel vrouwen vandaag de dag.

Sharp Objects volgt het vergeten verhaal van de keris van Klungkung, terug naar zijn oorsprong en naar de betekenis die het wapen vandaag de dag heeft in het postkoloniale Bali. De film verbindt de koloniale roof van de keris met het hedendaagse toerisme op het eiland.
Tegenover de ‘kennis’ uit koloniale archieven staan lokale kennis en mythologie. Zo ontstaat een gelaagd en soms verwarrend beeld van wat er bewaard is gebleven, wat verloren is gegaan en wat als ‘dood’ wordt beschouwd.

Een derde van de wereldwijde tinproductie komt van het Indonesische eiland Bangka. Tegelijkertijd staat tin centraal in de technologische ontwikkelingen van de toekomst, van kunstmatige intelligentie tot technologie voor hernieuwbare energie.
Natasha is een door zonne-energie aangedreven AI-stem. In deze film gaat Natasha op zoek naar hun genealogie en de waarheid over hun oorsprong — van kapitaalstromen tot arbeidsverhoudingen.
Met een gefeminiseerde stem, zoals die ook veelvuldig wordt gebruikt door AI-stemassistenten van technologiebedrijven, vertelt Natasha over de opkomst van de tinwinning op Bangka en over hun eigen bestaan. Daarbij beweegt de film zich tussen tropische antropologie van de natuur, waardetheorie, tijdsfilosofie, genetische mutatie, geopolitiek en automatisering.
