Can you hear the objects speak? Screening - Idak-Idak-Idak
This interdisciplinary film program reclaims the living worlds of displaced heritage by foregrounding the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values of objects taken from Indonesia, offering a gateway to the animist and relational cosmopraxis shared by many Indigenous nations today.
This program is part of interdisciplinary film program Can you hear the objects speak? by film platform wysiwyg and diasporic film platform Asian Movie Night. Spanning multiple events across various cities, the program seeks to reclaim the living worlds of displaced heritage. Rather than focusing solely on material significance—a logic that often mirrored colonial frameworks of preservation—the program foregrounds the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values these objects hold for the communities from which they were taken, as a gateway to understand the animist and relational cosmopraxis shared by many Indigenous nations in the present day Indonesia.

Idak-Idak-Idak is a hybrid-documentary relating the stolen Lombok Treasures with the Sasak diaspora through three generations of women: a daughter, her mother, and her grandmother. Blending full-spectrum cinematography with personal footage, this film moves between Indonesia and the Netherlands to examine colonial legacies, displacement and healing the heart of home. In Sasak, "Idak" can be interpreted as both “heart” and “absence”, becoming a container for memory, loss, and the unseen layers of the self between generations.
Dit programma maakt deel uit van het interdisciplinaire filmprogramma Can you hear the objects speak? van filmplatform WYSIWYG en diasporisch filmplatform Asian Movie Night. Met een reeks evenementen in verschillende steden onderzoekt het programma hoe de levende werelden van ontheemd erfgoed kunnen worden teruggewonnen.
In plaats van uitsluitend te kijken naar de materiële waarde van erfgoed — een benadering die vaak geworteld is in koloniale ideeën over bewaren en conserveren — staat het programma stil bij de emotionele, culturele, spirituele en gemeenschappelijke betekenis die deze objecten hebben voor de gemeenschappen waaruit ze zijn geroofd of meegenomen. Vanuit die invalshoek ontstaat ruimte om de animistische en relationele kosmopraxis te begrijpen die vandaag de dag door veel inheemse gemeenschappen in Indonesië wordt gedeeld.

Idak-Idak-Idak is een hybride documentaire die de gestolen schatten van Lombok verbindt met de Sasak-diaspora, verteld door drie generaties vrouwen: een dochter, haar moeder en haar grootmoeder.
Door cinematografie over het volledige kleurenspectrum te combineren met persoonlijke beelden, beweegt de film zich tussen Indonesië en Nederland. Zo onderzoekt Idak-Idak-Idak de erfenis van het kolonialisme, ontheemding en het helen van het hart van thuis.
In het Sasak kan ‘idak’ zowel worden opgevat als ‘hart’ als ‘afwezigheid’. Het woord wordt zo een ruimte waarin herinneringen, verlies en de onzichtbare lagen van het zelf tussen verschillende generaties samenkomen.
