In this documentary, director Marina Sulima follows the journey of a single tomato, tracing its path from her mother’s kitchen in Moldova to the high-tech greenhouses of Europe. Guided by a family recipe manuscript, she uncovers the lives and labour entwined with these tomatoes – connecting home kitchens, Moldovan fields, and industrial production lines. Crafted with care and a deeply personal perspective, the film mirrors the way tomatoes were once tended by hand. Through one humble fruit, this poignant, inquisitive, and richly observational documentary invites viewers to rethink the choices we make about what we eat, how it reaches our tables, and what the future of food might hold.
The screening on Friday will be followed by a Q&A with director Marina Sulima and producer Manon Bovenkerk. After the screening on Saturday, the audience is invited to join the Talk: Making Films Across Europe’s Divide at 14:00, with director Marina Sulima and producer Manon Bovenkerk.
In deze documentaire volgt regisseur Marina Sulima de reis van een enkele tomaat, van de keuken van haar moeder in Moldavië naar de hightech kassen van Europa. Geleid door een familiereceptenmanuscript, ontdekt ze de levens en het werk dat met deze tomaten verweven is – en legt zo een verbinding tussen huiskeukens, Moldavische velden en industriële productielijnen. Met zorg en een diep persoonlijk perspectief vervaardigd, weerspiegelt de film de manier waarop tomaten ooit met de hand werden verzorgd. Via één bescheiden vrucht nodigt deze aangrijpende, nieuwsgierige en rijk geobserveerde documentaire de kijker uit om na te denken over de keuzes die we maken over wat we eten, hoe het op ons bord belandt en wat de toekomst van voedsel kan brengen.
De vertoning op vrijdag wordt gevolgd door een Q&A met regisseur Marina Sulima en producent Manon Bovenkerk. Na de vertoning op zaterdag wordt het publiek uitgenodigd voor de Talk: Making Films Across Europe’s Divide om 14:00, met regisseur Marina Sulima en producent Manon Bovenkerk.
