THE SOUND OF MUSIC: A MEETING WITH THE REAL VON TRAPP FAMILY!

On Sunday, December 22, our cinema will host a unique event featuring two special guests: Johanna II von Trapp and Shela Gobertina von Trapp. They are the granddaughter and great-granddaughter, respectively, of Baron Captain Georg von Trapp, the inspiring patriarch of the family many know from The Sound of Music. The baron was married to Agathe Gobertina Whitehead, Georg von Trapp's first wife and an important figure in the family’s history.

The afternoon begins at 1:00 PM with an exclusive interview conducted by our programmer, Leendert de Jong. During this conversation, Johanna II von Trapp and her daughter Shela Gobertina von Trapp will share personal stories about their family history and its connection to the world-famous tale immortalized by Hollywood. This promises to be an intimate and inspiring event, offering a rare glimpse into the history of the real Von Trapp family.

Following the interview, at 1:45 PM, the original version of The Sound of Music (English spoken, no subtitles) will be screened. This timeless classic, with Christopher Plummer portraying Baron von Trapp, continues to captivate audiences of all ages with its unforgettable music and compelling story.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of The Sound of Music and the true history of the Von Trapp family!

About the Von Trapps

Georg von Trapp was a successful submarine commander in the Austro-Hungarian Navy during World War I and received prestigious honors, including the Military Order of Maria Theresa. In 1924, he was granted the title of Baron. He first married Agathe Gobertina Whitehead, with whom he had seven children, but she passed away in 1922. He later married Maria Augusta Kutschera, with whom he had three more children.

During the Great Depression, the family lost their fortune and turned to singing as a means of livelihood. Georg refused to collaborate with the Nazis after the Anschluss, prompting the family to emigrate to the United States. Their story later inspired the musical and film The Sound of Music.

After Georg’s death in 1947, the family home became a lodge in Vermont. In 2015, his granddaughter Johanna II and great-granddaughter Shela Gobertina founded the Georg & Agathe Foundation to preserve the family’s heritage and promote the arts. This foundation was partly inspired by Johanna II’s project to document stories of her mother, Johanna von Trapp, and honor the family’s rich history.
