Black Soil Film Festival presents: Finding Fela
Experience the power of Fela’s music and legacy with a special screening in collaboration with Black Soil Film Festival and PAARD.
Finding Fela tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, his music, and his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, which he used to express his revolutionary political views against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring about a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan-African politics worldwide. The power of Fela’s message is fully present today, and reflected in the political movements of oppressed people, who embrace Fela’s music and message in their fight for freedom.
Before the film screening in Filmhuis Den Haag, there is a 30-minute talk with Femi Kuti about the film and the legacy of his father.
Later that evening, Femi Kuti will perform live at PAARD Den Haag. Please note that tickets for the concert are sold separately.
Finding Fela vertelt het verhaal van het leven van Fela Anikulapo Kuti, zijn muziek en zijn sociale en politieke betekenis. Hij creëerde een nieuwe muzikale stroming, Afrobeat, die hij gebruikte om zijn revolutionaire politieke opvattingen te uiten tegen de dictatoriale Nigeriaanse regering van de jaren zeventig en tachtig. Zijn invloed droeg bij aan een beweging richting democratie in Nigeria en aan de verspreiding van pan-Afrikaanse politiek wereldwijd. De kracht van Fela’s boodschap is vandaag de dag nog steeds voelbaar en komt tot uiting in de politieke bewegingen van onderdrukte mensen, die Fela’s muziek en boodschap omarmen in hun strijd voor vrijheid.
Voorafgaand aan de filmvertoning in Filmhuis Den Haag vindt er een gesprek van 30 minuten plaats met Femi Kuti over de film en de nalatenschap van zijn vader.
