Victor Kossakovsky's Architecton is een indrukwekkend visueel onderzoek naar de relatie tussen architectuur, natuur en beschaving, waarbij beton centraal staat als symbool van zowel creatie als vernietiging. Kossakovsky stelt urgente vragen over hoe we bouwen en roept op tot een bewuste, duurzame benadering voordat het te laat is. In hypnotiserende beelden, begeleid door de betoverende soundtrack van Evgueni Galperine, verbindt hij historische locaties zoals de oude ruïnes van Baalbek, door aardbevingen verwoeste Turkse steden en gebombardeerde Oekraïense gebouwen. Centraal staat een landschapsproject van architect Michele De Lucchi, die met zijn 'magische cirkel', een plek waar mensen niet welkom zijn, pleit voor bescheidenheid tegenover de natuur.
Na zijn succesvolle documentaires Aquarela (2018) en Gunda (2020) duikt de bekroonde documentaire regisseur Victor Kossakovsky met Architecton in de wereld van architectuur. Een prachtige poëtische studie waarin hij de Italiaanse architect Michele De Lucchi volgt en indrukwekkende beelden toont van eeuwenoude ruïnes, moderne bouwwerken en recente verwoestingen als gevolg van de oorlog in Oekraïne en de aardbeving in Turkije in 2023. Met observerende blik bevraagt Kossakovsky hoe onze manier van bouwen invloed heeft op onze beschaving. Architecton ging vorig jaar in première op het filmfestival van Berlijn en was te zien op IDFA.

Kossakovsky poses urgent questions about how we build, calling for a conscious and sustainable approach before it’s too late. Through hypnotic imagery, accompanied by the enchanting soundtrack of Evgueni Galperine, he connects historic sites such as the ancient ruins of Baalbek, Turkish cities destroyed by earthquakes, and bombed-out buildings in Ukraine. At the heart of the film is a landscape project by architect Michele De Lucchi, whose “magic circle”—a place where humans are not welcome—advocates for humility in the face of nature.
Following his acclaimed documentaries Aquarela (2018) and Gunda (2020), award-winning documentary filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky turns his lens to the world of architecture with Architecton. This poetic visual study follows Italian architect Michele De Lucchi and presents breathtaking footage of ancient ruins, contemporary structures, and recent devastation caused by the 2023 earthquake in Turkey and the war in Ukraine. With an observational gaze, Kossakovsky examines how our way of building shapes our civilization. Architecton premiered last year at the Berlin International Film Festival and was screened at IDFA.
