3 trailblazers in the underground ballroom scenes of Southeast Asia take us into the heart of their communities. Teddy from Malaysia, Sun from Thailand, and Xyza from the Philippines each grapple with their individual stories of discrimination and resistance. In the world of ballroom dancing, they are trailblazers who have found new families and built safe havens for queer life to thrive unabated and bodies to express themselves freely.
7 years in the making, the film is an intimate portrait and a defiant celebration of ballroom culture as it travels from its origins in New York’s Black and Latinx queer communities, which Teddy and Xyza visit and learn from, to its global imprint in Southeast Asia. A collaborative effort between filmmaker and protagonists, 10s Across the Borders celebrates queer life at its most vibrant and resilient, one walk at a time.
The screening of '10s Across the Borders' on May 17 will include a Ballroom Performance by Andre Damian.
Andre Damian, founding Mother of the Utrecht Ballroom Scene, has been in ballroom since 2019, winning dozens of trophies across Europe in the categories Arms Control, New Way, Sex Siren, and more. As the Director of Ballroom Works, they focus on uplifting queer and trans people of color through weekly ballroom classes, workshops, community programs, and balls.
3 pioniers uit de underground ballroomscene van Maleisië, Thailand en de Filipijnen nemen ons mee naar het hart van hun communities. Teddy uit Maleisië, Sun uit Thailand en Xyza uit de Filipijnen worstelen elk met hun persoonlijke verhalen over discriminatie en verzet. In de wereld van ballroomdans vinden zij een plek waar ze echt zichzelf kunnen zijn, waar ze een nieuwe familie vinden en hun queer identiteit helemaal tot uiting mag komen.
Na 7 jaar in de maak, is deze film een intiem portret én daadkrachtige viering van de ballroomcultuur haar oorsprong vindt in de zwarte en Latinx queer gemeenschappen van New York, waar Teddy en Xyza op bezoek gaan om te leren, tot haar wereldwijde weerklank in Zuidoost-Azië. In 10s Across the Borders bundelen filmmaker en hoofdpersonen hun krachten om het queer zijn in al zijn veerkracht en levendigheid te vieren, stap voor stap, walk na walk.
De vertoning van '10s Across the Borders' op 17 mei wordt begeleid door een ballroomdansoptreden van André Damian.
André Damian, een van de grondleggers van de Utrechtse ballroomscene, is sinds 2019 actief in de ballroomwereld en heeft tientallen prijzen gewonnen in Europa in de categorieën Arms Control, New Way, Sex Siren en meer. Als directeur van Ballroom Works zet zij zich in voor het ondersteunen van queer en trans personen van kleur door middel van wekelijkse ballroomlessen, workshops, communityprogramma's en bals.
