CLASS STARTS SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2025
✨🩷 WELCOME CLASS OF 2025! 🩷✨
Welcome, Class of 2025! We celebrate the start of a new school year and a new cinema season with Back to School: a tribute to school-centered cinema, from high school classics to more modern offerings about the inner lives of teens and that one place where they all meet. The high school film is a subgenre of the teen film, which found its footing in the 1950s as teenage culture started to blossom in the United States. It has reached across film cultures and genres, finding a lasting pinnacle in John Hughes' eighties classics starring the Brat Pack. Evolving into a new century, the high school film has changed with time. In recent years, the subgenre has reinvented itself by stepping away from the classic 'jocks, nerds, and cheerleaders' trope, focusing instead on current themes such as LGBTQI+ inclusivity and mental health awareness. Still, the genre isn't always taken seriously by 'grown-up' film audiences and media. At Filmhuis Den Haag, we want to change that! These are the films we've grown up with and continue to love—films for teens of all ages.
All films will be shown with Dutch subtitles, except for Dead Poets Society, Superbad, Napoleon Dynamite, and Les 400 Coups. House of Hummingbird will be shown with both Dutch and English subtitles.
