FLOPFEST #5
This December we want to invite you to enjoy a very special anti-Christmas edition of FlopFest! ’Tis the season, and you may think red is the colour of Santa’s outfit, but we’d like you to consider another shade of red - a bloody red. FlopFest Santa is anything but a charming, jolly ol’ fella: here Santa is unhinged, obsessive, and murderous.
And we have a not-so-great selection of movies to prove it!
Everyone knows Home Alone, but we ask you to consider Dial Code Santa Claus. It came out a year before Home Alone and, well, it’s a similar concept - a kid trapped in his own home fighting to protect himself. But here the threat is - yes, you guessed it - a murderous Santa Claus (or more like Père Noël, did I mention the movie is French?). The boy is a genius, protecting his grandpa, hacking systems, running through secret passages, and it all started with a message exchange on an online forum. Moral of the story: don’t trust strangers on the internet!!
Coinciding with the release of the Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, we wouldn’t be Filmhuis Den Haag if we didn’t offer you the classic - the 1984 version. Some trauma, some Christmas spirit, and then add being forced to dress up as Santa after seeing your parents murdered by one(!!) and we have a recipe for disaster. But it makes for one hugely entertaining movie!
And the cherry on top, the undisputed classic - Christmas Evil. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Well, I love Taxi Driver, but it’s missing something… a little bit of Christmas spirit,” you’re in luck! This is exactly that, featuring a masterful performance by Brandon Maggart or, as I prefer to call him, Fiona Apple’s dad.
So you better watch out, and you better be nice, and we better see you this December at FlopFest!
